CONDEMNS NEW RATES.
Referring to the new postal rat-
es on newspapers sent by Canadian
publishers to subscribers in the
United States, the Hamilton Times
talks out in tweeting in this style :
"In another column reference is
made to the cheek Canadian news-
papers have received in connection
with subscribers residing on the
other side of the line. There is not
a newapeper In Canada but has lost
largely ly tbg increase of postage
on ii raapers---some of theta have
ose ITffiireede ot` dollars,' That is
only`one__side of the question. The
thousands of Canadians living in
the. United States kept alive the
love for the interest in their native
land -by subscribing for the daily
or weekly paper front the home
town. Now the increase of postage
has caused a great number of them
to cut even this connection that
bound them to the old 1:1.ome. Mr,
Lemieux's action may be of service
to°Canada in some way, but we
confess we have not seen the bene-
fit."
The favorite argument of those
selling western wheat flour, has
been that it is more economical
than Ontario wheat flour. Again
have Ontario blended flours proved
this false. In a recent article, that
reliable journal, "The Farmer's
Advocate" gives an account of a
series of experiments made at the
Ontario Agricultural College with
Ontario blended flour and Manitoba
"strong" -wheat flour.
In summing up the results, the
writersays "It must be remember-
ed, too, that while the strong flours
absorb more water, they also cost
more. In the case of floury used
in these experiments, the (Manito-
ba) strong patent cost about $1 per
barrel rdore than the (Ontario
blended) winter wheat flour. And
the indioations are that it requires
more shortening to give the best
results, thus making them (Mani-
toba flours) more expensive," This
simply shows that our farmers are
all on the wrong track. Here they
are, raising little or no Ontario
wheat, and spending their hard
earned looney for western flour --
when they should be raising their
own wheat and using Ontario
blended flours In their own homes
It rests with the farmers themsel-
ves. And every' farmer in the
province should unite with every
other farmer to grow Ontario
wheat, use Ontario wheat flours,
and thus keep up the demand and
the priees•for the most profitable
crop they can grow.
