Crediton, on Wednesbay of last week, and report 'a very pleasant time, These social gatherings are conducive of a great amount of good as in this way weget acquain- ted with each other, and learn how each society carries on their work. We would suggest that the three societies meet on some future occa- sion, and also think it would be a good idea to meet with similar societies of other clemoninations. A scientist says that if the earth was flattened the sea would be two miles deep all over the world. There's a whole lot of us in Kansas that can't swim." After five years' work the great transcontinental rabbit -proof fence has been completed in. West Aus tralia. Its length is 2,036 miles, and the cost of its erection has been very nearly $t,250,000. It is furnished at intervals of five miles with systems of traps, in which hundreds of rabbits are captured and destroyed daily. MEETING OF THE HURON COUNTY COUNCIL. The question is being discussed in Germany of a better organized system of treatment for women victims of. alcohiilism. It is a mat- ter which has long interested tem- perance workers in New York. In England Lady'73enry Somerset has worked on. 'the ,, same issue with 'tangible results. . In Germany, as in New York, a detail which makes the situation especially difficult is that the Brea - ter part of the increase in drinking; habits among women is in social circles removed from those fami- liar to the police courts. Of Ger- man alcoholics who have got into the statistics about ten per cent are woman. This is about the proportion of feminine to mascu- line shown, for an American in- stance, in the record of arrests for drnnkenness in Massachusetts for the period of 1882 to 1903 inolusive. New York's police books exhibit no feverish increase in the numb- er of women taken into custody for intoxication. That there are more women than ever before, however, who partake at the tablee in public restaurants of drinks ranging from beer to cocktails and highballs is not to be denied. And the matter-of-fact way in which these petticoated drinkers proceed, argues from any of them a home ',acquaintance with various tipples.. A preacher who recently made a tour of Chicago dining -plates, . till respectable, counted over two hundred and sixty women out of not quite four hundred and seventy, who took liquor with their food. There is this point of alarm Some physicians declare that the woman victim of alcoholism is hopeless ; most Of: them agree that she is a subject vastly more diffi- cult than finale drunkard. To es- tablish a place where she may be specially treated according to her .peril end with due consideration for her self-respect would seem to be a very practical step in social beneficences—World. ...
