Claflin, a prominent merchant, who is quaint and hum orous as he is keen -witted and rich : On a certain evening. about five o'clock Claflin was sitting alone in his office when a young man, p:.le and careworn, timidly knocked and entered. "Mr. Claflin," said he. "I am in need of help. I have been unable to meet certain payments, 'because certain parties have not done as they agreed by me, and I would like to have $10,000. I come to you bebause you were a friend to my father, and might be a friend to :te." "Coyne in," said Claflin; "come in and have a glass of wine." "No," said the young man; "I don't drink." "Have a cigar then," "No ; I never smoke," "Well," said the joker, "I would like to accommodate you. but 1 don't think I can." "Very well," said the young man, as he was about to leave the room; "I thought perhaps you might. Good -day. Sir. "Notts en." .said Mr. Claflin. "Y4ix den't.drink?'' "No', "Nor smoke?" "Nor gamble, nor anything of the kind?" "No, sir; I am superintendent of the—Sunday-school." "Well," said. This period will bring failing barometer, with corresponding rise of temperature, followed promptly by cloudiness, rain and possibly snow. The full Moon periods, and those of the new Moon as well. are times when seismic s).:altese are . far snore fre- quent. "'hey are uiso times when gales a:erq(sre certain and severe on thodukes and north Atlantic. All this is especially true about the month of November. Change to ninth colder will rush down from the northwest about the 19th to 22nd. A regular storm period extends from'Fridav the 22nd. to Tuesday the 26th. It is central on the 23rd, the Moon being at the same time at extreme north declination. Dur- ing this period look for marked depression of the barometer, high- er temperature and more rain, l turning to snow north and west, about the 23rd, 2lth and 25th. High barori, eter and change to colder, frostancl freezing will fol- low the disturbances of this period. A reactionary storm period is central on the last three clays in the month This period will reach its crisis on the 30th, the date upon which the Moon crosses the celes- tial equator, going southward. At- mospheric tides. like ocean tides, follow the Moon in its declinations north and south. Hence the storm periods in which. the Moon is rnov- ing south of the. equator, are mach more liable to be followed by chan- ge to cold, boreal conditions, as the atmospheric currents tend frons north to south. bringing the "cold out of the Hirth." As a rule the temperature of storm periods does not change to colder with the Moon on the equator. Electrical storms, even in the winter, are much more liable in storm periods at such times. Hence November will go out with rain, and possibly lightning and. thunder in many places southward, with rising baro. meter and rapid, change to much colder heeding down from the northwest with the incoming of December. Upon the whole, Nov- ember promises to be an average month for all' exposed and out -door interests, Much fair and open weather will alternate with storm periods. The rainfall will be light. We repeat our prediction of a min- imum of rainfall this season, and November will not be excepted. To check a cold quickly, get from your druggist some little Candy Cold Tablets called Prevent- ics.
