It is, perhaps, ral that he should come to this de ciston. The leadership of the 'Op- position in the Legislature would involve personal sacrifice and an inevitable defeat in the next Pro- vincial contest. It is certain. however, that he did much to re- store the character of the Liberal. party in Ontario, and to infuse enthusiasm and energy into its broken ranks. With his disappear. ance from the Legislature the party in this Province again will be sadly ' demoralized, and all hope of a vie - tory in the next Provincial elections: must be finally abandoned. Failing; to call in •'a capable outsider,' . and this would be difficult to do even if the outsider could be found ' Mr. MacKay of North Grey. will probably succeed to the leadership ' of the Provincial Opposition, He is a better speaker than Mr. Gra- ham and it stronger Pa.rliament'tf•- tan. But no leader cn.n gain the, confidence of a State in twelve month% even if conditions were more favorable than those which Mr. MecRay must confront in this Provinne. Sir Wilfred Laurier a• nd the Liberal managers have de- liberately sacrificed the Provincial party in order to strengthen the ;party position at Ottawa. This, perhaps, is a natural course from the parte* standpoint, clearly as it reveals the indifference of politic- limes to any higher interest when e party is in question. Mr. Graham has undoubted political strength in Eastern Ontario. and he has a oertain;aT d wel1.deserved personal. popularity. It will not be pretend- ed that he is a man of commanding talents. But there is no reason •to doubt that he will be a satisfactory Minister and an efficient manager of the party in the constituencies. - Toronto News.
