THE TREATING CURSE. A despatch from Detroit the other •day told in two paragraphs the life -tragedy of a pian who describ- ed himself as a medallist in oratory of the University of Toronto. He • was at the hospital, recovering from delirium tremens. It was the old story, Behold what whiskey will do for A. Haan, was his explanation. Once I was honored and respected, the orator of the Varsity in my day, and at one titue owning $250,000. Last night I slept in an alley a- mong some empty barrels, no home but the streets, and no friends. 1 havo taken the "cure" time and again, but I am not v, able to withstand the invitation fi of my friends. When I get on I my feet they are willing to know e me and say, "Hello, Charley. come, let's have a drink," and I cannot refuse therm. It is no use. a 1 can't reform. t The story of Charley points two morals. One is the old total -ab- stinence i, aarninL; that, needs, now as in the past, emphatic rand per- sistent iteration. The other is the burden and curs of the treating "habit. The only sure and safe course for any young man, and the one that fir:; becoming; a condition of ecnployrnent in many lines of business, is total abstinence. '•1f I never drink intoxicating liquors I will never get drank" is sound in logic and safe in practice. (Concluded next week.) PUBLISRIC15 BY E. The bestial.. mer that ever lived cannot grow vegetables on poor land, or land that is ill drained and but half. cultivated. A private despatch received. at Ottawa says that C. Hyman will return home from California about the end of the week. He will tend- er the resignation of his seat at once, and an election will fellow in London with Mr. Hyman as Liberal candidate at as early a date as possible. n . Ontario apple growers would do well to take special pains this com- ing season to spray their fruit. The northwest market was, tipened largely for this promise. last year and by a continuance of good clean well -packed fruit into thaet:part we will bo assured of good prices and a steady market. The inland revenue department has issued a bulletin showing ana- lytic tests made with tomato catsup Of 49 samples tested, only eight were found to be unadulterated, the other containing "preservativ- es" or coloring matter, or both, r being of the nature of "mixtures" without being so labelled. The county of Perth is .asking the Legislature to permit it to come under the Good Roads Act, but with township control. Mid- dlesex obtained an act of this kind last session, but it is said not to have worked satisfactorily. The objection to all such proposals is that they tend. to prevent uniformi- ty and to make it more difficult to have a common standard. Rubber gatherers have hit on a method of tapping the .trees that greatly increases the yield of , sap. Instead of making new punctures every time they tap a tree, they reopen the old wound. It has been suggested that the ides; might be adopted ej !`mu. , e e'u.4 ;p akers. It would' be"ii'4i interesting experiment at any rate. A good idea was introduced at a meeting of the Peterborough coun- cil a week or so ago, when a . pro- position was submitted to tax all bachelors, in order to meet deben- ture debts, It reads as follows : For those between twenty and thirty years of age, $5 a month ; from thirty to thirty-fiye, $10 a month ; decreasing to five again hen the man reached forty ; at fty, $20 a year, and on reaching tis three snore years the tax would ease. tr",,Mfratersneinapea. . A, A gratifying increase in the, aver, go salaries of rural public school eachors in Ontario is an interest. ing fact noted in the annual. report of the Department of Education recently issued. The report shows the teacher's salaries in rural schools tend to increase. The aver- age for male teachers in these schools increased from $385 in 1904 to $402 in 1905, and for feniale teachers from $204 in 1904 to1311 iu 1905. This, it will be noticed occurred before the recent amend. merit to the school law fixing a minimum salary and grading the salary in accordance with the as- sessment of the section. Some municipalities are • agitat- ing against the dog nuisance. The dog question in its bearing on the sheep industry has become a serious one in this country. Sheep are not kept on ono farm in twenty. Farmers declare they will not raise them and take the risk of having their :flocks depleted every year by renegade dogs, and thus the raising of one of the most valuable animals the farmer can keep is stopped, It is to be hoped the legislatnre wilt take some action to lessen the number of useless dogs, and make it possible to raise sheep. Dogs that are in the habit of prowling around nights should be shot on sight, and the tax on dogs of -a certain size should be doubled.
