The Crediton Literary Society is
being re -organized for the winter.
The school desks for the new
school have arrived and will soon
be put in place.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Taylor have
moved to:Elkton, Mich,, near which
place Mr. Taylor has purchased a
farm,
Chas. Finkbeiner, a former resi-
dent of Crediton, was recently
married at Seaforth to Miss Maud
Callaghan. of that town. They will
reside in 'euforth.
Miss Lizzie Mots:, slaughter of II.
lIotz of this place, was recently
married to Mr. Wm. Heatherly of
London. The ceremony was per-
formed by Rev. J. Livingten, pas-
tor of the Wellington street Mettio-
ist church, London.
Frank N 'rtbeott has accepted a,
position with Young Bros.
Telephones have been placed in
the fcllowing places in the village;
S. Brown. C'. Zwicker, W. England,
F . Sweitzer and the Sovereign
Bank.
Mrs. Gen. Lowson. who is in St
Joseph's hospital, London, is slow-
ly recovering,.
Geo. Laws nn, who is teaching
Sharon school, has handed in his
resignatir.n to take effect after
Christmas. He intends continuing
his studies in the high school. Earl
Campbell. who is teaching at Khiva
has also handed in his resignation
and will study chemistry in Fort
William after New Year's.
GAYFIELD.
Miss Maude Pollock has re$urned
from a four months' visit at Selkirk
Man.
Jatnes Cameron has been engag-
ed to teach S. S. No. 3. Hay, at a
salary of 0,500.
Mustard's gang left last week for
Beacom's bush, where they will
prepare logs for next summer's
work.
John Spencer has returned from
the West. and reports lots of snow
out there. He says the roads were
blocked for three days.
Robert Braley has arrived home
from Owen Sound. He has been
on the survey boat Bayfield.
Miss Minnie Armstrong, who left
some time ago to train for a nurse,
has returned home and has resum-
ed her former duties as organist in
St. Andrew's church.
Four young lads about eight
years old left on Saturday afternoon
for a walk to Jas. McGee's, eleven
utiles away. On their arrival Mr.
McGee, finding that their parents
knew nothing of their whereabouts
telephoned to Bayfield. They walk-
ed back main on Sunday afternoon.
John Falconer. who has been
confined to the house on account of
illness, is able to be out again..

blacksmith shop which he recently
purchased from J. R. Hobkirk.
Mrs. Smallacomlte visited her
daughter Mrs. G. Walker of Guelph.
Miss Dolly Hagan, nurse of
Clinton, visited friends here last
week.
A local option convention was
held in the Methodist church on
Monday evening,.
The snowfall on Sunday night
made good sleighing for a few days.
Mr, R. Bengoughcalled on friends
in Zurich on Sunday.
Froil Ilowald has moved into the
dwelling he has bad erected for
himself.

The .contest for the reeve's chair
in Stephen.p orrises to be between
the two old` time opponents, Sam-
uel Sweitzer and Henry Willert.
Miss Mary McArter, 'who has
been teaching in. Sodom for the
past year has resigned and leaves
at the end of the present year, she
having engaged to teach •in 8 S.

While Samuel Kirk, Exeter North
was engaged in breaking old iron
at Mr, Jackson's a piece of the
metal flew Into his eye, inflicting a
painful wound and for several days
he had no use of the injured optic.
Frank O'Brieu of near Chiselhur-
st hacl six head of cattle buried be-
neath a straw stack one night re-
cently, the stack having fallen over
on them. They were all dead when
found. It is quite a loss to Mr.
O'Brien. •
On Wednesdar, ierov. 28th, Olive
Edna, eldest daughter of Mr. and 1-1
Mrs, Josepl1 Hawkins, of Eliniville,
reeve of Usborne, was united in
marriage to Mr. George Hunter. a ---
prosperous young farmer .of T'rs-
borne.

a large wire enclosure in one of his

ber of skunks. He intends raising
them for their hides.
John A. Gregory, son of Thos.
Gregory, of Exeter and Dr. Sperling
of North'Battleford hate purchased
the North Battieford News and are
negotiating for the pnrchase of the
newspaper paelished at Lloyd
Minster.
Rev. M. C. McLennan," a former
pastor of the Koppen Presbyterian
church and now in the insurance
business, will remove shortly to
Halifax, which will be his business
headquarters. He will have a sal-
ary of $3,000 a year.
A pretty wedding was solemnized
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Flet-
cher, Exeter. Wednesday, Nov. 28,

The township of Colborne - has
certainly had an expensive exper-
ience so:pelts as ltaw courts are con-
cerned, and it -is said to be threat-
ened with another suit. The friends
of the late W. Ivers, who was found
deed on the road, are said to be
taking action against the township
for 6'10,000 damages..
The Sovereign Bank at Clinton
moved into its new premises last
-speck, though the exterior is not
all completed yet. A marble pillar.
on its way from Quebec, will re-
place the column of bricks standing
at the corner. The premises have
been thoroughly overhauled and
are fitted out in the most modern
style.

Among the students who are at-
tending the Goclerich .Model School
who have secured schools for next
term are: Miss Brimicombe and
Miss Sterling have schools in Gode•
rich township ; Miss Shaw and Miss

Miss Law, an out -of -the county
school; Clinton I:loggarth, near
Shipka, and Alex, McLennan, No.
5, Colborne.
The Seiaforth Milling Co. shipped
three cars of flour to the Cobalt
district last week. The opening up
of that • rich mining and timber
country, which,- ten years ago. was
practically unknown, will furnish
an immensely increased home mar-
ket for the food stuffs of elder On-
tario. There will be more money
made in ,supplying this • demand
than in having mining stocks.
The G. 84..0. • railway workmen
a few days ago unearthed a com-
plete whiskey making outfit buried
in the swamp in the southeast cor-
ner of Grey,. The machinery had
evidently been buried there for 20
years, It Was buried beside a large
pine.steinp and was' covered with
brush u,nd was in a, fairly good con-
dition. It had evidently been used
to make good.whisker for the early
settlers,
