FORECASTS FOR OCTOBER.
By Rev. Irl. R. Hicks.

central on the 23rd and 24th, with
Moon at first quarter on the 24th.
On and touching these dates, tem-
peratures will,react to warmer, the
barometer will fall, breaking down
from the west progressively, gener-
al cloudiness will ensue, and areas
of autumnal rain, turning to snow
squalls in the north., will make
their regular march across the
country. At this season of the year
especially when a Venus equinox
is prevailing, the possibility of
danger on the lakes must be Watch

and hardship about the 23rd and
24th, and for general change to

BERMAN WEIAL
Ts another prominent business
man here, having. been established
in business some twenty-two years,
and he has built up a very stecoess-
ful trade by close attention to busi-
ness, and by always giving good
values, Mr. Well handles furniture
of all kinds, organs, pianos, har-
ness, trunks, valises, etc., and his
trade is well established. In organs
and pianos he carries the very best
grades made in Canada today. In
harness he carries a fine stook of
single and double, its well as horse-
men's supplies of all kinds. He al-
so handles the Singer Sewing Ma-
chine. the beat machine on the
market today. When .you want
good values in any line of goads he
handles give him a call and our
word for it you will find him rea-
sonable in price and bis goods sat-
isfactory. As a townsman Mr.
Well is well and favorably known.
CHAS. WELKER.
There are liveries and liveries,
but one of the best acknowledged
by the publio generally as such in
this part of the country is Ohas.
Welker's. He keeps a fine line of
good drivers and an equally pine
line of serviceable rigs. Mr. Welk-
er never allows any of his horses
or rigs to become old or antiquated,
as the moment a horse in his judg-
ment, is no longer fit for the livery
he gets rid of him, and the same
way with his rigs. For a good
driver and a nice turnout, you
should see him. For a pleasure
drive Welker's livery is the place
to go for a rig. He makes a special-
ty of commercial driving. And to
commercial igen he quotes special
rates. As a townsman Mr. 'Welker
is well and favorably known.
MRS. MoCORMICK•
Another business here that we
must not overlook is the King Ed-
ward Restaurant, which was start-
ed here two years ago on King Ed-
ward's birthday. A first-class con•
fectinery and ice cream palors in
connection. Real fruit flavors used.
Sundaes, phosshates, and a first-
class soda fountain. Everything
thoroughly up-to-date. Everybody
is invited to give this restaurant a
call. A good restaurant in connec-
tion, where meals are served at all
hours. Oysters in all styles during
the fall and winter. A good line of
canned goods. And she can always
be depended upon to give thorough
satisfactionin any line of goods
she handles. It is undoubtedly the
leading restaurant. Confectionery
and ice cream palors here. And
Mrs. McCormick is in the enjoy-
ment of a good trade which she
steadily increases each year.
R. LARIMER.
Another well known citizen.here
is R. Lorimer, who runs the stage
between here and Hensall carrying
the mail and who is courteous and
obliging to all classes whose busi-
ness takes them to Zurich and Mr.
Larimer has run the stage here no id
for close upon twenty years,
and he is amen universally esteem-
ed by all classes of the community.
F. W. HESS.
In our description of the business
]nen of our town it would hardly
be complete without mentioning P.
W. Hess, our jeweler. By turning
out work of the best kind he has
built up a trade which comes from
all sections cis the country. And if
you buy a watch many other article
of jewelry from him you can de-
pend upon it as being just as re-
presented. .As a watch repairer he
cannot be beaten and when "doctor-
ed" by him they run like new.
Give him a call when in need of
anything in the jewelry line and
you will be used right. As a citizen
he is highly osteoniecl and very
popular with all.
J. J. : ERNER,
There are very few towns in On-
tario the size of Zurich where you
will find a busier store or a better
class of goods to choose from than
you will see at Merner's. Through
close attention to business • and
selling goods at a reasonable profit,
Mr. Merner has succeeded in estab-
lishing a business that would do
credit, to any store in towns three
times ithe the size of Zurich. Mr.
Merger has had an exceedingly
wide experience in the general store
business and this accounts for the
feet that his store is always stock-
ed with the latest and best in dry
goods, dress g000ds, millinery, etc.
This fall he has put in stock a
splendid stook of furs, and for
values or quality they cannot be
beaten outside of Toronto. .Anybody
intending to purchase anything in
the line of fur coats, fur runs, fur
boas, etc., should be sure and see
his stock before making their pur-
chases. He keeps a first-class line
of groceries, and people who once
become a customer of this store al-
ways remains one. A tailoring de-
partment is run' in connection and
this, under the management of Mr.
E. Appel, has won customers from
all sections of the country by the
high-class work turned out. As a
citizen Mr. Merner is well iutd
favorably known and very poplar.
CHAD, FRITZ.
Among the leading business men
here, ie C. Fritz.. the leading beet
and shoe inan in this neighborhood,
Mr. Fritz hast had a lengthy exper-
iencein the boot and shoe business
and he is in a position not only to
quote cheap. prices, but to show
the very best classes of goods. His
intimate knowledge of the trade,
places him in a position to secure
exceptional values and to offer rare
inducements to buyers. In the se-
lection of goads for the fall he has
been more particular than ever this
season in his selections. And as
he is an acknowledged expert in
leather and shoes,' those who wish
at all times to get the best value
for their money, .should see his
goods, examine them and get his
prices. His stock is always an up.
to -date one, rhe equal of any in the
Province. All the newest patterns,
latest shapes and the best Canadian
makes. Repairing of all kinds
done reasonable and satisfactory.
Mr. Fritz is one of . Zurich's most
esteemed and valved citizens,
F. HESS & "SON.
Have justreoently taken over the
Deering Agency here, from. J. F.
Rickbeil, Mr. Hess should made a
first-class man in that business as
he is well known throughout the
country and highly . esteemed by
all. There is no class of agricul-
tural machinery in the merkot to-
day that excels the Deering binders
and agricultural machinery of all
kinds, which have attained a world-
wide reputation. In Iasting qualities
and general efficiency there is none
that excel their machines. And
the same may be said of all their
agricultural machinery used on the
farm. When yon are thinking of
investing in any line of agricultural
goods give him a call. He can
save your money. He also deals in
buggies,"and wagons, cream sew -
raters. Repairs for all the mach-
inery he handles kept in stock.
Mr. Justus • Melick will be the
travelling salesmen for the Deering
machines.

the most thoroughly skilled horse.

surpassed in the county.
COMMERCIAL HOTEL.
There are few hotels in this conn
try the equal of the Commercial,
Zurich. It is first-class in all its
appointments, The house is a
model of neatness, and Mr. J. P.
Rau, the esteemed proprietor of
this well appointed hostelry. has
left nothing undone to make it all
that a first-class ;commercial hotel
should be. He has added new
furnishings, new carpets, etc., un-
til today nothing has been left un-
done that should be done to make
it right up-to-date In the dining
room the very best the market
affords is always provided. In the
bar you get the best of wines,
liquors and cigars. Everything
there is to your liking. Good
sample rooms in connection for
ooinmereial men. Mr. Rau makes
an ideal landlord, and the trade of
the Commercial may be said to be
the very best in this section of the
country. Good stabling in connec-
tion. When in Zurich do not fail
to give the Commercial hotel a call,
S. RANNIE & SON.
Another progressive business
firm here that we mast not over-
look in a trade edition is than of
S. Ronnie & Son who conduct a
first-class grocery, and flow and
feed store. Sines starting in busi•
ness here some three years ago,
they have by close attention to
business, by always dealing fairly
with the public, and invariably
giving good values built up a good
trade. Their stock of groceries
and canned goods is an exception-
ally fine one, and they can always
be depended upon for honest treat-
ment. In flour they handle the
best brands manufactured. And
in feed they keep everything in
that line. Those in quest of bar-
gains in groceries good values and
honest treatment should give them
a call. As business men they are
among Zurich's best known and
most, universally respected.
JOE DIRSTIN.E.
.Among the diversified business
interests here we must not neglect
to mention Joe Dirstinee who runs
the tonsorial parlors. When you
wish a shave as good as a barber
ever gave or fashionable Bair cut,
give Joe Dirstine the up-to-date
barber a oall, He has had yearn of
experience at the business. and he
is an exceptionally fine workman.
As a townsman Mr,- Dirstine is ex-
ceptionally popular 'with all classes
of the community,

house.is a model of neatness, is
heated -1)y hot air and lighted by
electricity, No finer table is set
in this country, no matter where
you go, In the bar you get the best
kinds of wines, liquors and cigars.
Everything of the best. Mr. R. R.
Johnston has had a lengthy exper-
ience in the hotel business, shaving
been some twenty years in it here.
Three years ago he started in again
in partnership with his son. Both
make capable hotelmen and both
are highly esteemed by the travel-
ling public, and no less so by the
townspeople and farming commun-
ity and they leave nothing undone
to provide for the comfort of their
guests. Good stabling in connec-
tion and an attentive hostler in
charge. When in Zurich you are
respectfully invited to give the
Dominion House a call, you will
be used right there.
FRED WITWER.
Conducts a first-class confection-
ery and restaurant in Merner's
Block here. The business is under
the management of his daughter,
Miss Vercy, and everything usually
found in a high-class store ran be
bought here. All kinds .of fruits
in season, such as poaches, bananas,
pineapples, etc., kept on hand, al-
so No. 1 oysters served during the
fall and winter. A good class of
canned goods kept constantly on
hand. The candies, fruits, etc.,
are the best that money can buy
and if you want something real
good it will pay you to buy your
confections at this store. A fine
line of cigars of the hest brands
can be bought here. Witwer's con-
fectionery is among the leading
businessess in this line in town.
.JOHN PREETE R.
Proprietor of Zurich's biggest
store, carries without a doubt one
of the finest stocks of high grade
Dry Goods, fancy and staple dress
goods, high grade groceries, hard-
ware and millinery of any store
here. You can always depend upon
the goods you get at the general
store of 3. Preeter. Goods that
can be relied upon all the time. His
goods are right because they are
bought right and they are sold
reasonable, owing to the fact that
he aims at buying large quantities
thus saving the discount, which he
divides with the customers. When
you want goods that you can rest
assured are right you should give
him a call, Recently Mr. Preeter
has taken overthe extensive hard-
ware stock of L. 0, Charlesworth.
and he is prepared to supply the
public, ,ls he has been doing during
the past ten years, with seasonable
goods at reasonable prices. Give
him a call when you want anything
along these lines. See his beautiful
fall goods, and especially his milli-
nery rooms stocked with the very
finest up-to-date goods. Mr. Preet-
er also conducts it first-class hard-
ware store in connection, with his
business. Stoves, ranges and hard-

call. His leader is the Home Penin-
sular. His stook is vary complete
and prices as low as any. As a
townszmtn Mr, Preeter is one of
Zurich's most valued business men.
-YUNGBLUT & DEICHERT.
Conduct the Zurich Meat Market
and have succeeded in working up
an extensive business in this line.
This is undoubtedly due to the
fact that they purchase nothing
hut the best cattle for their meat
supply, and they always keep things
neat and clean around their estab-
lishment. Their meats are always
tender and wholesome and it would
be hard indeed to find more oblig-
ing men to deal with. When you
want a nice roast, or bolognas,
sausages, etc., give the Zurich
Meat Market a call. Both Mr.
Yungblut and Mr. Deichert are
esteemed and very popular citizens.
PETER BENDER.
Prominent among the business
naen we must not neglect to men-
tion. Mr. P. Bender, who conducts
a first-class boot and shoe store
here, keeping in stook the very
best make of Canadian boots and
shoes. And as he is a grand judge
of the same, he never gets his
I shelves filled up with unserviceable
goods. The people are more parti-
cular today than they ever were
in respect to their footwear, noth-
ing but the latest styles and the
best makes will satisfy then.. .At
Bender's boot and shoe store you
are always assured of the very best
in all lines of men's women's and
children's shoes. You have a
splendid stook to make selections
from and purchase of and at prices
you will admit are very reasonable.

very best that money can buy and
when you want the latest try them.

and overshoes for the fall and win -
tee. Repairing done on.the short-
est notice.
D. S. FAUST.
Another of the leading business
men here, keeping -one of the most
extensive stooks of general mer-
chandise, is D. S. Faust, who has
been engaged in business here for
upwards of thirty years, and whose
trade may be said to be one of the
best in this part of the country. In
high -plass dress goods as well as
staple dress goods he shows a
splendid range of goods. And the
same may 'be said of the very ex
oellent stock of ready-made cloth-
ing that he is showing for this
season. Why pay fancy prices for
tailor made suits when you can get
two good suits for the price of one..
They look well, fit well and last as
long as any tailor made suit. Mr.
Faust is a shrewd buyer and this
coupled with the fact, that he al-
ways sells reasonable, is what has
tended to build up his very suc-
cessful trade. And tl:e people gen-
erally need no recommendation to,
visit this store as it is the recogniz-
ed headquarters for bargains at all
times. In groceries he keeps a.
good stock of pure fresh goods.
Post Office in connection and Cen-
tral Telephone Agency. As a towns-
man and a business man Mr. Faust
is well and favorably known.
JACOB DEICHERT.
It is the general opinion of people
who are in a position to know, that
Jacob Deichert is one of the few
first-class mechanics in this part of
the country and as 'a horse-shoer
particularly he excels, curing all
defects of horses feet caused by im-
proper shoeing and he has achieve:.
a splendid name hereabouts for
first-class work. In the lines of re-
pairing of buggies, wagons, mach-
inery, etc., he has also achieved a
good name. Good work at living
prices. As a townsman he is a man
well and favorably known.

SHATTERED HOPES.
As a proof of the estimation in
which Daniel wus helel by his em-
ployers, he was selected to fill an.
important situation when little
over twenty years of age. His
youth did not staled in his way, nor
his 'want of experience, for, as the
junior partner remarked, "Daniel
Moffat's character was made up of
trntb and faithfulness."
What a day it was for his mother
that in which Daniel was apprised
of this great rise in his fortunes ;
her heart leapt for joy : and as for
his sister, she was almost beside
herself with happiness. It -was so
delightful to think that Daniel had
won the confidence of his masters
by the worthy manner in which he
had fultlllecl his duties.
With his h hopes Daniel made his
new start in life ; whatever difficul-
ties beset the way, he was deter-
mined to succeed, But there were
difficulties in the life of a commer-
cial traveller of which he had no
conception.
Mr. Martin. the junior partner,
who was a warns friend of Daniel,
gave him a hint or two before he
set out, that in some measure open-
ed his eyes. Amongst other thing;,
he was informed that in a certain
important district he would require
to humor his customers in order to
gain their goodwill.
Daniel's heart sank when he was
told that there was no hope of get-
ting an order in the. district afore-
mentioned, save through the
medium of the social glass. Re had
been reared on strict temperance
principles, and he had no taste for
strong drink. For a moment he
was almost tempted to resign his
appointment, but the fear of dis-
pleasing his employers withheld.
him and besides that, ho was now
the chief support of his mother and.
sister. He comforted himself that
things were not so bad as Mr Mar-
tin represented ; but good -will a,ncl
patronage could only be obtained
through the "pup of kindness" in
Ke—as Daniel found to his cost.
In vain he tried to excuse him-
self, his youth and his natural dis-
liketostrong liquor was nothing to
the tippling community. The old
way of doing business or no busi-
ness at all. And be had his em-
ployers' interests to think of as
well as his own likes and dislikes;
if be meant to keep faith with them
there was no help for it but to go
in with the habits of his patrons.
