The directors of the Hay Branch
Agricultural Society met in the
Town Hall hero on Monday. The
secretary -treasurer is now ready.
to pay the prizes.
The year 1906 will go down to
history as one of great disasters—
Vesuvius in Italy ; the earthquake
in California ; a similar occurrence
in Chili ; the typhoon at Hong
Kong, and lastly the Gulf storm at
the Month .ofiisssissippt. The loss
of life in each was considerable, the
loss of property immense.
The $9000,00 mystery has been
cleared up, Mr. Powell, who is
teller in an Exeter bank, has given
up the money, and it has been de
posited in a trust company in Lon-
don, where it will remain during
the lifetime of Mr. Holwell, the
grandfather. After his death it
will be distributed among his legal
heirs.
CHOSEN FRIENDS ATTENTION.
A meeting will be held on Friday,
Oct. 19th at 8 o'clock. Business of
importance. All members are re-

PRIZE LIST CORRECTION.
Mr. David Schnell should have
been credited with first prize for
pumpkins instead of C. Fritz. We
:might have known that Charlie
can't grow pumpkins.

BUSINESS CHANGE.
Mr, J. F. Rickbeil, who has suc-
cessfully carried on the Deering
implement business here for some
years, has disposed of the same to
Mr. Fred Hess, Sr. Mr. Hess has
also purchased the shop. which is
one of the roomiest in this section.
TNF SNOW STORM.
The strong winds of Monday and
Tuesday ended with a nice January
snowfall on Tuesday night, About
eight or ten inches of snow fell and
Wednesday some enjoyed the first
cutter ride of the season. The
snow was 'very wet and as a result.
fruit and shade trees .have been
ruined by the weight of it breaking
off the branches. Telegraph and
telephone wires are down and the
damage in this section will amount
to a large sutn. Tho apple crop
also suffered severely.
SHOOTING MAOTH.
The regular shoot of the Gun
Club was held last Thursday after-
noon. The weather was very un-
favorable and as a result poor scor-
es were made. In the shoot -off
ane. O'Brien captured the medal.

against Mr. E. Becigneul late of St.

Mr. Joel Bechler informs us that
he is running his cider mill, every
Wednesday and Thursday, not
Tuesday and Thursday as previous-
ly reported.
Chas, Welker took first money
for his team of carriage horses at
Kirkton fair last Friday. He took
six firsts with them at this year's
fall fairs,
Mr. and Mrs. John Deichert, Sr.,
returned this week from a pleasant
visit with friends and relatives in
Toledo, 0., and Detroit, and New
Haven, Mich.
Wonder if Prof. Hicks sent this
weather over here. If he did he
ought to be made turn right about.
This kind of weather will never do
for the month of October.
Messrs. F. W. and W. G. Hess
went down to the Pinery on Tues-
day on a duck shooting expedition.
They expect to return in three or
four days with all kinds of clucks—
perhaps.
Mrs. Schmidt, after a pleasant
visit with her daughter, Mrs, C.
Hartlieb, returned to her home in
Sebringville on Friday. Miss Etta
Hartleib accompanied her and will
visit there for some time,

The department will allow an
open season for quail for the month
of November. A circular sent oat
draws attention to the necessity for
sportsmen to practise a little self-
denial and be satisfied with three
or four brace per day, instead of
destroying whole bevies as in the
past.

Mr. Dan. Molsaacs as tended the
funeral of his grandmother at
Parkhill last Saturday.
Miss Ida. Sipple, who spent the
summer months at her home bore,
returned to Detroit on •e,o.turday.
Mr. John Schafer, whci was taken
to Stratford hospital Seriously ill
with blood poisoning, is recovering
and was taken to his bode in Park-
hill last Saturday.'`
John Kuntz of the 14th con.,
Hay, was accidently kieiked by a
horse one day last week and su-
stained severe injuries. He is
slowly reoovoring from the effects
of it.

Mr. Chris. Hey, of the Babylon
Line was married to Mrs. Mary
Howald, of this village, We ex-
tend congratulations.
The Local Option camptign will
soon be in full swing' all over the
province and the flood -tide of elo-
quence will soon roll along the
leading roads and down the back
concessions. The vote takes place
at the municipal elections.

sized pail about half full of water,
into which stir a handful common

ty is ready, drain off the water,
