An order has been sent out from
the Attorney -General's department
at Toronto instructing all magis-
trates to sent down professional

Zurich is in need of a factory or

give employment to -more of our
young people. At present their is
just a limited. detnand for a certain
class of wage-earners and •the over
'upply has either to remain idle or
go to the towns or cities.where
work of all kinds is plenty, and
wages better. Is it strange then,
after all, that so many of our young
people leave for the cities. Ca,u
this exodus be stopped? We believe
not.
Having supplied most of the re-
quirements in the way of. public
libraries. Andrew Carnegie is. now
seeking the opinions of school
boards and other public bodies in
Sootland as to the best gleans of
disposing of the part of his fortune
which he desires to 'distribute dur-
ing his life for the benefit of hu-
manity, and asks for suggestions
regarding the most beneficial ob-
jects. Ile says that while he is
willing to assist in providing
church organs, no money will be
given to support ministers or
church services, which he considers
should bs paid for by the con grega-
tions.

The immigration figures for the
month of Smtember show a strik-
ing similarity to these of Septem-
ber of Iast year. The total number
of immigrants a year ' ago this
month was 1,912, while so far this
September, 1;700 have been regis-
tered. For the last fejt* weeks the
immigration movement to Ontario
has been decreasing rapidly, only
27 of the last boat load. of Scotch -
men being sent to Toronto.
Among the most interesting ex-
hibits at the State Feir, Detroit,
was that of the pure food depart-
inentof the Detroit Board of Health

freshing drinks sold on the grounds
and after extracting the coloring
matter from them used this to dye
woollen cloths, which were' places].

be almost pure salic acid, with pink
coloring. Beware of tire fall fair

The eastern firm which has the
contract for building the Michigan
Central tunnel, under the Detroit
Riverlet the contract for digging
the big trench across the river, in
which the steel tubes with their
casing and foundation of cement
piers will rest, to the Dunbar and
Sullivan Dredging Company, of
Buffalo. and the latter began actual
work on the tunnel proper to -day.
Upward of four Hundred thousand
cubic feet of earth will have to be
removed. The bottom of the trench
will be 5 feet below the surface of
the water, .48 feet wide at the bot-
tom and 100 feet wide at the top.
