TEM }1EIIALn believes that a high
school class in connection with our
public school would be a .big help
to our town. Residents would be
attracted and eventually the extra
taxes would be only slightly felt.
The fees from pupils would go a
long way towards meeting the in-
creased expense. This is a subject
that should receive the serious • con-
sideration of our citizens.

SHATTERED HOPES.
',You are to he congratulated,
Mrs. Moffat, Daniel is a son to be
proud of."
Those. words were addressed by a
venerable clergyman to a mother
at the close of a school examination
As the minister passed on, Daniel
came slowly forward. He was the
handsomest as well as the cleverest
boy in the secondary department of
the school, and every eye was turn-
ed upon hinn in admiration as he
received his prizes and walked up
with them to his proud mother.
Daniel Moffat was the son of a
country surgeon, who died when
the boy was nine years old. Happi
lv bis mother was a woman of
strong good sense and Christian
Principle, and under her careful
training Daniel's character was
brought out in its fairest. colors.
From his childhood Daniel exhi-
bited talents of a high order, and
astonished his teachers with his
aptitude for acquiring, knowledge.
His instructors delighted in him,
second -sighted mortals prophesied
that the lad would make .himself a
name in the world. But along with
his shining qualities Daniel possese
sed an amiable disposition, which
rendered him a universal favorite.
He was affectionate, warmhearted,
and generous, the best of sons, as
his proud mother declared.
It was Mrs. Moffat's 'wish that
Daniel should be a •clergyman, but
her means were narrow ; and when
Daniel was about sixteen a gentle-
men who had been a personal friend
of his father's used his influence to
get him into an important house of
business in a large commercial city
accordingly, the idea of the church
as a yr ofession was abandoned.
It was a disappointment to bis
mother at the time. but ere long
Daniel showed that his talents had
not been misdirected when they
were put to account in the com-
mercial world. He had a clear
head, tact. and energy. and soon
his aptitude for business was ob-
served by his employers, Speedy
promotion rewarded his industry
and faithfulness to duty ; and as
years went by he continued to be
in favor with his roasters. In the
gt.y, giddy season of youth lie walk-
ed blameless. bravely withstanding
temptation, and turning a deaf ear
to the syren voice of pleasure. His
quiet little chamber at home, with
its dearly Prized treasurers, had
more attra, etion for him on the
duties of the day was ended that
the theatre or mnsic•saloon. Janet
Moffat, was amply rewarded for her
watchfulness and care, in Daniel's
exemplary life, and it gladdened
her heart to see that as he grew in
tears, he aspired to a noble

FORECASTS FOR OCTOBER.
By Rev. Irl. R. Hicks.
A reactionary storm period will
return on the 10th, 11th and 12th
While the influence of the Earth
and Mercury periods is declining at
this time, the Venus disturbance is
increasing in strength and approa•
chin its center. Hence the Venus
,clharsoteristics will mark this, and
all the other periods in October.
This means that very warm weath-
er, low barometer and thunder
storms will mark the first stages of
the storm periods, but sudden
ohanges to very cool weather,
northerly gales and frost will pro-
ha.bly come with the north and
west tangents of storm,oenters. Re-
ferring again to the first period in
this month, we will add that earth-
quakes will be Balt in various parts
of the globe on and near the 2nd.
