Miss Agnes Kaercher of London
is visiting at her home here this
week.
Mrs. (Dr.) Sellery of Hensall
visited friends in the village on
Monday.
Mrs. Chas. Bossenberry of Cava-
lier, N. D., is visiting relatives and
friends in this vicinity at present.
Mr. Milfred Faust, who is at-
tending the Northwestern College,
Napierville, Ills., is spending a few
weeks at his home here.
Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Hess return-
ed from the Pinery last Friday.
Mr. Hess reports that his motor
boat worked fine and is just the
thing for trolling for pike.
At the meeting of the Y. P. A.
on Tuesday evening, .Mr. Alf.
Gellman was elected as a delegate
to the annual Y. P. A. convention,
which will be held at' Rodney from
.Aug. 20th to 81st,
Stock has been taken in the,:
hardware store of L. O. Charles-
worth a.nd Mr. Preeter is now in
possession, Mr. Preeter is a suc-
cessful business man anti should
make a success of this new venture.
Mr. VV lliam Stelck, of the ' 14th
con., received a severe kick on his
leg, from one of his horses, on Sat-
urday, whieh will lay him off work
for some time. He is able ,to be
out, but is obliged to use a cane.
Labor Dav Sports.— Arrange-
ments are.well under way to have
a good celebration here on Labor
Day, Monday Sept. 3rd. There
will be several horse races, fodt-
ball match, blue -rock match and
athletic sports, Also good music
by the Jubilee . Brass Band.. All
roads will lead. to Zurich on Labor
Day.
The repairs to the school house
Have been completed and the pre-
mises present a very neat appear-
ance. The west room will hereafter
be used. for the senior scholars, it
having been provided with a num-
ber of new desks and the old poor
replaced by a new one. The three
rooms have bean papered and
painted and everything presents a
new appearance. It is to be hoped
that the pupils will take enough
pride in the appearance of their
school to try and keep the rooms
looking neat and tidy.
DEATH OF HENRY WALPER.
Another ofthe pioneers of Huron
County has passed away to the
silent majority in the person of
Henry Walper, Sr., of this village,
whose death took place on Monday
evening. The deceased had retired
to bed and his wife hearing him
breathe very hard once or twice
got up and galled him by name, and
on receiving no answer made an
investigation when she was start-
led to find. that Mr. Waiper had
breathed his last. The deceased had
reached , the ripe old age of 83
years and was in good health up to
the time of his death, He lived on
the farm, now owned by his son,
Henry, on the Bronson Line, up to
a few years ago, when himself and
-wife moved to this village. The
deceased was a man of upright and
Sterling character, and was a con-
sistent
on-sistent church member. His Widow
four sons, and two daughters, all
married, survive him. The funeral
was held yesterday forenoon and
was largely attended, interinent
taking place in the Lutheran came-
tery, The servi oes were conducted
by the pastor, Rev, E. Sohuelke,
Miss Phoebe Rickbeil is attend-
ing the millinery openings at Lon-
don at present.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Deichert, Sr.,
attended a funeral in Zorra town-
ship last week.
Mr. and Mrs. H. J. D. Cooke of
Hensall called on' friends in the
village on Tuesday.
A successful dance was held in
Rau's Hall on Tuesday evening.
The attendance was large.
Mrs. D. S. Faust still continues
very ill, although she has improved
a little the last few days.
Merner is offering some big bar-
gains in his midsummer reduction
sale. See his ad on page 8.
Mr, O. H. Ehnes, at present of
the Sovereign Bank staff, Exeter,
spent Sunday at his home here.
A number from the village at-
tended the Barnum. & Bailey circus
which showed at London :yesterday.
A fulliength picture of the King,
about six feet in height, has been
received at Government House,
Ottawa, and hung in the ball room
there.

The public school re -opens next
Monday, with the same teaching
staff as before the holidays, viz:

sistants Misses Pearl Nicholson and
Minnie Best.

The .wheat harvest in the :West

danger to the crops may be said to
be practically at an end ; it is now
simply a question of obtaining

during the past week indicate that
the yield will be fully up to earlier
anticipations.
