Chapter 2.
"There is no place wh. ere earth's
sorrows . are so felt as up in
heaven,
There is no place where earth's fail-
ures have suoh kindly judg-
ment given ;
For the love of God is wider than
the measure of our mind,
And the heart of the Eternal is
most wonderfully kind."
Two years passed away, and the
story of the picture was never
again mentioned between the two
men. They were dallying over the
five o'clock tea, hoping no one
would come to disturb the well-
earned rest, one beautiful evening
in June. Their peace, however,
was disturbed by the servant enter-
ing the room with a note. which
ran as follows :

her daughter as took lodgings here
last week, and the lady is ill and
wants to see Dr. Markham. No
other will do, so don't send young
Haldene. "Mary Jones."
It was well-known Mrs. Jones
had a grievance against Haldene,
on account of his not being able to
cure the Tate Mr. Jones when that
gentleman broke his neck while
chopping wood. The sour -faced
lady, never failed to remind him of
the fact.
"It is a fine night," observed the
young doctor. "I think I'll drive
as far as Seaborne with you. I have
to call at Sanders' and, besides, it's
a perfect treat to see Mrs. Jones
when she's ferocious. as she will
be when she sees me."
An hour later the two men were
