"The handsomest gentleman in the city and the -wealthiest and most fasci- nating is enamored with that little Puritan 1" she said spitefnllp to her companion, •'l•3e needn't be," was the grim reply, tis Gus waited for Eleanor. She let hire be very attentive to her all the way home= unusually so ; but it was because she was too absorbed in her own happy thoughts to notice it. Her "goodnight as he left her at her own door, was so cordial that he felt highly elated. and his cousin laughed. "Don't you think Lillian Porter a charming girl?" "Lillian Porter be banged," was the unde- corous reply. "There's only .one girl in N—worth a moments con sideration, cousins excepted. "Somebody else thinks so, too." Somebody else can go to Halifax, I'll take no interference, The next evening according to promise, Keith called on Eleanor, so did Mr Carleton, whether owing to a cou- sinly hint has not been ascertained The last named gentleman was. however. detained cy a ohanoo meeting, and Eleanor had been able to ask and have answered the spec- ial questions, turning in, as was his habit, at the side entrance. "I beg your pardon," he said jauntily, with an easy bow to the gentleman Pre sorry to disturb your conversa- tion, but the truth is, I've come for you, E1 begging your pardon again, Weswick, homesick girl being excuse enough for most any rude- ness, I suppose Mag is so blue she has sent me to bring you over to the house whether or no, and for her especial benefit. "it will have to be 'no' most decidedly tonight, (bus" answered the young lady quietly, though her color rose and something ominous flashed in ber eye, "you will take my regrets to your cousin, I'm otherwise engag- ed" "Do not let me detain you"g hhean Keith, but she silenced hies with a gesture. "1 prefer to be detained," she said with dignity "I am at home because I desire to be" Keith's eyes wandered to Mr Caz- leton's face. Anybody else would have felt the weight of this just rebuke, but he was smiling in his usual half saucy, half•amusecl fash- ion, ',Now you are angry El," he said "With ,you? lmpossible! you do yourself honor. :'lir Carelton " Such a tone night veeil brake a man witince t a.s..replied in a cunoilititian voice. "Now that you are ac- quainted with the facts, will, it be expecting too rutins, Mr Carleton, if you are requested to regard them: Nota word in reply. The young lady gave Keith such a glance of mingled amusement and vexation that he came at once to the rescue. But if Mr Carleton has been dismissed, he failed to accept the situation as also to has- ten to the comfort of his lonely re- lative. He made himself quite at home where he was, drumming on the piano, turning over books, gyrating from room to room, oc- cassionnlly supplying a word in the conversation which had lost its zest since his appearance. Keith walked home that night his heart heavy with questioning. What was thesecret of Gus Carleton's Glaring? He surely roust have some right to the position he so openly assumed. The gentleman's cour- age oozed before the possible mean- ing of his rival's assurance, as he acknowledged to himself that this woman had become dearer to him than life itself. What a pity he could not have heard the young lady's parting woids to the even- ing's intruder, "Mr Carleton, by what authority do you presume to come, into illy presence unalteo.tr.'• ed and interfere with my friend c+ 4 000 8 Total Assets over 44,000,000 I'lontreal eaa Head Office ra IBRANCHES ®® Alberta—Calgary, Camrose, Diamond City, Edmonton, Lethbridge. d * British Columbia—Revelstoke, Vancouver, Westminister A. aManitoba—Winnipeg, Portage Ave. vOntario—Alvinston, Amherstburg, Aylmer, Brockville, Chesterville, t Clinton, Drumbo, Dutton. A man dying of cancer in a Now York hospital committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol that had been brought to him for the purpose. This has recalled public attention to the set of a mine -owner in the Rocky Mount• ains, whose wife went over a precipice six years ago while riding a mule through a pass. She was hopelessly crashed by the fall, and as help could not be secured her husband took her life to relieve her from suffering. He was afterwards tried for homicide and honorably acquitted. CONSCIE NCE MAKES COWARDS A quiet, bashful sort of a young fellow was making a call on a -west-end girl one evening not so very long ago, when her father came into the parlor with his watch in his handl It was about 9,30 o'clock. At the moment the young man was standing on a chair straightening a picture over the piano. The girl had asked him to fix it. As he turned, the old gentleman, a gruff stout fellow, said : "Young man, do you know what time it is?" The bashful youth got off the chair nervousiy. -Yes sir," he replied ; "I was just going." He went into the hall without any delay took his hat and coat. The girl's father followed him. As the caller reached for the door- knob the old gentleman again asked him if ho knew what time it was "Yes"5ir," was the youth's reply Good night!" And he left without waiting to mit his coat on. After the door bad closed the old gentleman turn- ed to the girl. -What's the matter with that fellow?" he asked. "My watch ran clown this afternoon and I wanted him to tell me the time, so that I could set it. It was; between Eleanor and Monsuer Laselie, our friend being quite guiltless of intentional eavesdropping. It was at the old stone house, Keith had called and round Miss Myers out, but she was expected at any moment, ho had employed tho time while waiting. (To be continued) Ethel M. 'Williams, Pres. Supt. A MATTER OF NECESSITY. A Washington woman who was visiting some friends in Philacio• 1phia noticed that the little girl in the family was eating some new sort of cereal at breakfast.
