Why the English Went to Egypt.
An essay on Egypt by one of Black-
burn's brightest school children: "Phar-
aoh was noted for making bricks, and
he had his named stamped on every
brick. He was a very extravagant ruler
find in 1879 he brought the country into
debt and oppressed the people and they
had to work for nothing. Ile was very
cruel. England then sent Lord Croner.
and he has ruled Egypt wisely and
well." --From the Lo;Idon Globe.

A FALL FROM THE SKY.
The one Question we are asked
everywhere, even to this day, just as
we were asked it on the roof at.
Friedenau, is "How did it feel to fall
a third of a mile in a balloon" If
you want to know how it felt to pass
through the experience we did, think
first of what we had to do. We had
to move a ton of sand out of the car,
said we had to do it in less than two
:marmites and a half.. If you want to
:know how that feels, go down into
the cellar and move a ton of coal
frr,rn one side to the other while
•mine one holds a watch and tells you
when two minutes and a half goes by.
'Then try to see how much you have
felt and remembered while you were
deleg it. It will give you a better
i triers if you move the coal while you
:are in a state of • intense, vivid mental
teencelltration, cotnpress ing years as
It were into motilents. If we had had
but these two and a half minutes for
the rest of our lives, as it looked at
first, they would have been at least
eery good measure.—From Augustus
itaost's "A Fall from the Sky" in Oc-
aber Century.

REASONING QF -DREAMS,
Only to a few people there conies oe•
easiotlally in dreams a dim realization
of the unreality of the experience, "Af-
ter all, it does not matter," they are
utile to say to themselves with more
or less conviction. "This is only a
dream." Thus one lady, dreaming that
she is trying to kill three large snakes
by stamping on thein, wonders, while
still dreaming, what it signifies to
dream of makes; and another lady,
when she dreams that she is in any un-
pleasant position—about to be shot, for
instance—often says to herself: "Never
mind, 1 shall wake before it happens."
This quality of dreaming consciousness
is a manifestation; and the chief one,
of what is called dissociation. In dis-
sociation we have a phenomenon which
runs through the whole of the dreaming
life and is scarcely less fundamental
than the process of fusion •by which the
imagery is built up. The fact that the
reasoning of dreams is usually bad is
due partly to the absence of memory
elements that would be present to wak-
ing consciousness, and partly to the
absence of sensory elements to check
the false reasoning which without them
appears to us conclusive. That is to
say, there is a process of dissociation
by which ordinary ehannels of associa-
tion are temporarily blocked through ex-
haustion of the nervous elements, and
the conditions prepared for the forma-
tion of the hallucination.—North Ameri-
can Review.

They never do damn — always good.
C'nuct•rning them, Mrs. Richard Mut-

We gave them to our baby when he
was teething and they kept him

(Montreal Star.)
Two hundred and seventy-five d'ogs
were captured on the streets of Mont-
real last month by the police, and the
glorious work is going on at the rate of
about twenty per dieme Most of them,
probably nearly all of them, were con-
demned to slaughter because their own -
era ncgli'Cted to pay, or could not pay,
the civic dog tax. Our impression is
that the police could be better employed
ie catching and killing rats. Of course,
it is all a matter of taste; and if the
civic authorities prefer • -rats to dogs,
they are acting according to their tastes
and convictions, in this interfering with
the balance of nature. At the present
time Montreal can, We believe, boast of
more rats to the acre than any other
city in the world.

'LIFE IN A GREAT CiTY.
(Chicago Tr'ibnne,)
The crowd blocked the sidewalk and
spread out half way across the street.
Men struggled and almost fought to
force their way through, to find out
what was going on.
"Virhat's the trouble?" asked a dozen
voiees.
The answers were unsatisfactory. It
was a man in a fit. Somebody had. faint-
ed. Two newsboys were fighting. A wo-
man had been run over by a delivery
wagon. A pickpocket had been caught in
the act,
"Aw g'wan, here! Move Min!" cociv-
eratec, a policeman, who was the last to
arrive.
The crowd melted away.
Then the cause of the excitement was
revealed.
It was a glazier, trying to break off
half an inch from the bottom of a large
pane of plate glass.
