Noted Soldier to inspect Canadian Branch of Organization He Founded THE CRY OF THE TWO-THIRDS General Baden-Powell and his boy scouts will open the Canaadian National Exhibition this year. The chief of the boy scouts of the British Empire has accepted an invitation to come to Canada and touch the button at the big Fair, and at the same time hold a grand review of the various scout crops throughout Canada, The review will take place in ,trout of the Grand Stand, where the opening ceremonies of the 'Exhibition this year will also be held. The- boy scouts will be camped. ' ons time "I 'trust you did not misunder- stand my refusal to attend the opera tonight, 11/1r Weswick" she said. "All things are lawful unto me but all things are not expedient, and lost you fancy my motive higher than it is, I will confess 1 do not like the opera." I ,could not Imagine as much will you please tell me why?" "It does not help the best in me ; more, at times I feel it shocks the worst in me." She said no more upon the subject, neither did ho. He knew she was passionately fond of music he knew also that in ail tillage her tastes were pure enol simple. He needed. to know no more. "Do you see that face?" she asked, pre• sently, pointing to the window of a handsome ]louse they wore nearing Yes, he saw, his eyes had been at- tracted by the unearthly appear- ance of a wonman sitting in an easy chair in the bay window that pro- jected over the street. The strong electric light from the corner op- posite fell over the quiet deathlike features with startling effect. The wide open eyes alone bespoke life. •,That. is Effie Joselyn a year•old bride" went on Miss Myers. Everybody re- members the relief of Mafeking. The wave that swept over Canada when the glad news flashed under the Sea thatthe first long stride towards breaking the powers of the Boors in South Africa had been taken. That night while bolls pealed and crowds gathered, the name of 13. P. the defender of Mafeking for one -hundred long days was on every lip Most heroes are so forgotten, but B. P. has been too busy a man to drop even for a moment out, of the people's mind. At the close of the war he organized the South. African 0on- stebulary, and in .1898 founded the boy scouts. In bringing Baden Powell to Canada, the Canadian National Exhibition have two objects in view. One to keep in mind those deeds of heroism which do so much to rouse the pride of Britons and feed the fires of patriotism. and further, to give recoggniti' n to a man who is doing so much in times of peace to develop the youth of rhe country and to mare of every Canadian boy a thorough Briton. Keith Weswick was not shocked as he listened to these words. There was nothing shocking in either manner or tone of the lady beside him. Her low voice was earnest, pathetic, tremulous with feeling, that was all. "Excuse the seem- ing•rudeness'' he said, "Bat you ladies are a puzzle to nie ; so weak and clinging in (sonic respects, so mighty in others. I do not under- standiyou." "An immortal being with its sides human and divine is a large thing to understand," she replied gently. "We often do not understand ourselves," Then as ho did not reply, she added, "I have murdered Mr Weswick, if you quite understand yourself, I beg your pardon for saying it. but I have thoueht sometimes you were hardly awake to the possibilies of your life." "Thank you," he said and there was a touch of humanity in his quiet tone, that did not escape her. "Ought I to say it?
