Dr. Droutly, have anything to do
with the withdrawl of my father's
funds?" A contemptuous smile
curled the listner's lips,. "You
would better ask him," he said. "x
would really like to relate a few
facts to you, Droutly, did not my
relations with your uncle forbid.
He has peculiar notions of his own
and it sense of honor that I do not
pretend to understand; but I do
not think it would harm you to
know that every penny you possess
or ever have possessed has come to
you through his generosity." "He
is a liar, sir," cried Justin ; "a
knave and a liar if he says so."
"He doesn't say so, would not say
so. I say so," replied Mr. Spoffard,
not a little nettled "You are
mistaken, sir. He has deceived
you as he has othrrs. Dr. Droutly
is aknave." "If you said fool I
might agree with you, young man,.
but knave 1 The devil himself
would think it quite useless to try
to tack such a term as that on Jack
Droutly. Justin you are young let
me give you a bit of advice." But
the youth was already at the door.
the knob in his hand.. "Perhaps,"
he interrupted—"perhaps Mr.
Spoffard, you will decline, as
others have, to tell me how my
father died?" "You will find out
quicker than you desire if you keep
on as you have begun," was the
unsatisfactory reply, and a passion•
ate" yes, I will find out if I die in
the attempt, answered him as the
door slammed after the retreating
form. "Poor Droutly," sighed the
gentleman thus left alone, "strange
fate to be born the only sensible
member of the family and with a
conscience big enough to include
them all! His father's son 1 I
should say so," It was after two
o'clock. Dr. Droutly stood his
watch on the table before him fold-
ing powders. when someone enter-
ed his office. He did not look up;
he knew pretty well wlio stood, at
the door.. "Dr. Droutly." The
grave eyes flashed their surprise
upward."My boy?" he answered
tenderly, the more so that the
simple glance had revealed to hirci.
has Visitor slcond,tion.

the fumes of poison, smiting her
cheek, yea, and her heart also,
sickening it with fears which the
pest made forceful. "0 bairnie.!

"But you inust answer me, Ann;
you must, do you heir me?" "1

raised his voice. eWetalcl you kill

"The old nurse rocked her body to

heard man never carried," answer-
ed nurse, relieved at being asked
that which she could answer freely.
"What became of his part of the
business? Did my ' mother with-
draw his funds or has she an
interest still?" "I' canna say, I
dinna ken. I never heard anything
about it. The doctor, he cared for
all that. He can tell you, he knows
everything, had charge of every-

"Your knowledge may be es limit-

Ann." he answered •'Even I
might be able to enlighten you
somewhat. The doctor can tell
me, can he? Well, he shall," and
he flung himself out of the room.
•She heard the front door shut a
little later, and, looking from a
window,. saw Justin go up the
street. She hoped most devoutly
that ho would go at once to his
uncle ; that gentleman would know
how to deal with hint. Bnt he did
not. He went instead to the office
of Spoft rd & Co ;having halted
