WHAT TO DRINK,
Remembering That Alcohol is in
Reality a Depressant.
Those of us who drink cold water all
the time ---•before, between and after
Meals—seldom think of the troubles of
other's less methodical.
With some of these people what to
drink in spring is a question of some
importance. Not alcohol, please, for, in
any form, wine, spirits or beer, alcohol
fa a depressant, its stimulating efforts
being quite temporary and fleeting. On
corning home chilled; or if exhausted in
the evening, a little wine or brandy may
be of service, 13ttt no one should forget
that it is the greatest mistake to face
a nor:easter with the aid of a dose of
Alcohol.
Coffee, chocolate and cocoa, with
abundance of milk or cream, aro un-
doubtedly the best drinks for the nerves
in spring, And as purifiers and substi-
tutes for vegetables lime juice with
plain or aerated water, and lemonade,
are excellent beverages.

Novel Salvage Device.
An extremely novel salvage arrange-
ment has been adopted by the United
States Steel Company in the recovery of
a cargo of nails which was sunk in the
Mississippi River at New Orleans. Or-
dinarily a dredge :you'd have been used
for this purpose, and it would. have been
necessary to send a diver down first to
break open the liege, but the up-to-date
method followed in this instance was in
making use of a magnet for the purpose.
This magnet was three and a half feet
in diameter and weighed 3,000 pounds.
It raised five or site kegs at one time.
The magnet will soon be tried on some
srr.nken wire and metal llii.ilieg strips
which are under water in the same vi-
cinity.

"'OLD GLORY."
r',k.. —Capt. William Driver.
The stars and stripes are so frequently
referred to as "Old Glory" that that title
attached to the American flag has be-
come famous, yet few know the origin
of this expressive term.
Nashville, Tenn., claims the honor of
thus chrietering the national emblem.
The term dates back to the entranee of
the f term army into that city, after
the fall of Fort Denelsou, when the flan
belonging to Capt. William Driver was
hoisted over the capital. This same
flag was used in the Whig convention
of 1840, when William Henry Harrison
was elected --..the first Whig president..
Long years before this William Driver
hailed from Salem, Mass., but like most
boys born in that part of the country,
at the age of 12 he went to sea, and at
the age of I8 was master of his own
ship with the flag flying at the mast
head, wlii,•h he even then called "Old
Glory." It was his prt•ud boast that the
flag of his country had never been low-
ered or its honor tarnished, and he was
privately called "fillet i;lory' by those
who knew him intimately.

How bright is tete sun? Pio two au•
thr rides agree, says The ,Scientific Am-
erican Another estimate has recently
been made by C Nordmann. The Wee -
tire temperature has been determined
with his pyrometer.. was found to be
. about 5320 deg, absolute. .Now, the
brightness of an incandescent body

'a function of the temperature, and this

with n:wh^erous terrestrial light sources.
Taking neto consideration the absorp-

probably about (1430 deg. absolute. The
corresponding brightness of the mean

that we were assured would be upon us
