Its Wonderful Power in Curing
Sick Cattle and Colicky Horses
Makes "Nerviline" Worth
Its Weight in Gold.
1'he stockmen or farmer that doesn't
know of the thousand and one uses of
"Nerviline'' around the stable, has •a great
deal to learn. ''Why, 1 \vouldu't think
of locking my stable clxor at night with-
out knowing I had a supply of 'Nerviline'
on hand. I always get a dozen bottles
at a time from roy druggist.
"To cure colic,
indigestion and
bad stomach in a
horse or cows then:
is no remedy on
earth in the snare
class as 'Nervi -
line,' Last sum-
mer I had a :$250
horse that got the scours, and I would
have lost haw. if I hadn't been able to
give him Nerviline. I poured a full
bottle of Nerviline in a pint of water
down his throat and saved his life, I
know of neighbors who have saved
many heads of valuable stock, stricken
with colic, just by using Nerviline. it
is equally good as a rub -on liniment,
and I Know from my experience that for
man or beast, internally or externally,
'Nerviline' is worth a dollar a drop."
James E. McCullough,
Stock Breeder, etc.

Painting a Cement Wall.
The following method of painting a
cement wall was described at a recent
convention of Canadian master painters.
The building had become discolored in
places. and the joints were of diferent
color from the surface of the blocks.
Two parts of Portland cement, together
-with one part of marble dust, were mix-
ed with water to the consistency of thin.
paint or a thick whitewash. The wall
•iwas well wetted before the application
of the paint and kept constantly wet
while the material was applied, and then
kept for a day in order to make the ee-
atent wash adhere to the cement sur-
face, The wash was applied with ordin-
ary whitewash or calcimine brushes, and
a num was kept busy playing a spray
on it while the work was being done.
The whole secret of success lay in keep-
ing the wall constantly wet.

Prizes for Peasants.
The hilly territory of Trieste, it is
stated in a consular report on that dis-
trict, is covered by pointed stones which
prevent any cultivation, and some years
ago the Soeieta Agraria offered prizes
for those who would remove them and
thus ehange the waste of ground to
meadows. The work has now been going
on for some years, and every autumn a
commission ascertains the area of the
proposed redemption and the difficulties
to be encountered, and fixes the prizes
to be given. In spring it again visits
the improved ground and pays the prizes
if deserved. This year in the different
parishes 66 peasants improved 44 acres,
and received $1,040.

C A.itSE FOR WORRY.
(Life.)
"We are going to consult a specialist
About our boy," says the father.
"About your boy?" echoes the friend.
"Why, he seems to be a perfectly
healthy, rugged lad."
"I know, but we have asked him time

grxows up, and he never has said that
he want` to be a railway engineer."
SCOTT AS A. DUNCE.
Gave Successor Fee for Keeping His
Place Warm.
Once there was a dunce.
The name of this dunce was Walter
Scott, and when he wa sat sehool he was
such a dull boy that his teacher called
hila "the great blockhead."
But Walter Scott did not cry and he
always tried to do his best, and after-
ward, when he grew up to be a man, he
became famous all the world over be-
cause of the great books which he wrote.
And because he vias so famous he was
made a knight, and afterward he was
known as Sir Walter Scott.
And yet he was such a dunce at
school
One day, when he had become a fam-
ous man, Sir Walter Scott went on a
visit to the vory same school where he
had been called "the great blockhead."
He talked to the teachers and to the
boys, and then he said. "You have
shown me the clever boys. Now show me
the dunce. You have one, haven't you?"
The teacher, therefore, called up a
poor little boy, who was vory bashful at
being brought before such a famous
man as Sir Walter Scott.
Sir Walter smiled cheerily at the lit-
tle boy, and said. "So you are the dunce,
are you?" `Yes, sir," said the little boy.
Sir Walter pated him kindly on the
head, and said, "Well, my good fellow,
I was the dunce when I was here, so
here is a half crown for keeping my
place warm!"
I rather think that every boy in the
school must have wished he was the
dunce then!

Large Brains and Great Minds.
How far are the physical characters
of the brain indicative of mental low-
er? The question is still unsolved. "wo
investigators, Professor W. - on Bee'le
terew and Professor R. Weinberg, nese
examined minutely the skull of the
late Professor D. J. Mendelejeff, one a.€
the greatest chemists of the ,ast cen-
tury. They report that the size was
above the average, but not-'emarkably
so, the weight being 1,571 grams (t5
ounces). Several eminent men have bac
heavy brains. Cuvior's weighed 64 1-2
ounces, Dr. Abereombie's 63, Professor
Goodsir's 57 1-2, Sir J. T. Simpson's 54,
and Dr. Chalmers' 57; but no one now
thinks that a large brain means a great
mind.—From the London Evening Stan-

Explosions in Sewers.
Heavy explosions in the sewers of a
portion of New York City containing
many garages, states a contemporary,
again drew attention to the danger of
allowing petrol to enter sewers. Some of
these explosions are so violent as to
resemble the explosion of a small boiler.
Manhole covers were blown into the air,
windows in the neighborhood were shat-
tered, and a number of persons injured.
The sewers of the city discharge into
tide water, and at high tide the sewage
in them backs up in some cases. It is
probable that petrol floated on the sur-
face of the sewage when the latter was
hacked up by high tide, and its vapor
was ignited by a spark that might have
been due to several causes. While such
explosions will not follow every dis-
.eharge of petrol into sewers, their oe a-
sional oecurrenee and the possibility of
•much serious injury from them, states
`oixi contemporary, are ;a,jgstifieation
for rigid rules efficiently , enforced ;to
prevent . the practice.' .

A subway for Vienna is projected, ac-

system, which, if built, will be the first
subway in the city, is designed to run in
two lines, erossapg each other at right

Exercise.
One must exercise.
„One must exeteise rightly.
Breathing deeply is the first neces-
sity.
Breathing also should he slow and reg-
ular.
.At intervals one should breathe at an
open door or window.
And in exercising one should always
attempt to do something.
Simply and loosely tossing the arms
about is of very little use.
One should try to reach as high as
ono can, then bring the finger tips to
the floor.'
Naturally walking and outdoor games
are the most beneficial, with always the

Bass and Duck in North Carolina,
Letters received at this city from
North Carolina report that the outlook
for catching bass In the waters of that
State is poor. Thes bass season in North
Carolina opens on October 20, and in
Virginia five days later. As yet the in-
dications in Carolina waters for a good
bass year are poor, and it is made more
so by the fact that many of the streams
in which bass were formerly caught in
haul seines are now so full of grass as
to prevent the working of the nets, mak-
ing the catch of the fish dependent on
hook and line fishing.
The outlook for wild ducks and geese
in Carolina waters, whence comes most
of the supply used here, is said to be
good, as the recent cool weather is
causing the birds to appear in numbers
on their feeding grounds in the sounds.

REMOVAL OF RUST,.
Acid in Cement a Source of Safety
in Concrete,
Tho Scientific American has the fol-
lowing note of interest and importance:
"The cause of the disappearance of rust
from iron bars, eta,, used iu the erec-
tion of reinforced concrete structures
has been traced by Rohlalid, in Stahl
and Eisen, to the presence of acid car-
bonates and sulphates in the cement,
these salts dissolving the iron oxide and
leaving the metal bright. The cement
in setting absorbs carbonic acid from
the air, thus forming the necessary acid
carbonates, and experience has shown
that the de -rusting process is effected
;while the concrete is setting and com-
mencing to harden, This discovery af-
fords an additional guarantee for the
safety of reinforced concrete structures,
inasmuch as the metal is protected from
rusting by the alkaline reaction of the
cement during the mixing process, and
action of the acid carbonates in an early
stage in the erection of the structures.
