The July statement of the chart- ered banks which has just been issued shows a financial, condition of the country which is eminently satisfactory in itself ''and is still more ; cheering when compared with the figures For the.sa.me month last year. The changes that have taken place. during the twelve monthsin the different items "of the statement are tersely set forward as follows :—Deposits on demand increased 33.05 per cent ; Deposits after notice increased 15.7 per cent. ; Current loans in Canada. increased 2,7 per cent.; Current loans elsexdiere inereuscdl 1.5 ler cent, ; Call loan's in Canada increas- ed 41.0 per cent, ; Gall loans elsewhere increased 108.0 per cent. ; Circulation increased 0.4 per cent. During the depression of 1908 total deposits for July dropped 22 millions compared with the same month in 1907. The gain during the past year has been no less than 121 millions. "Harp of Zion,” is the name of the new song book, purchased by the Evangelical Sunday School. This is considered one of the latest and best song books for the 2oth century S. Schools. Time was, says an exchange, when Canada took far more notice than it does now of the lack of ap• predation with which some people on the other side of its southern border have been disposed to re- gard its people, its climate, and its resources. In the first place these iitP '-^onceptions ark, he coming less'itrequent ; in the second Canada is quite big enough to dis- regard them. With American farmers flocking into the Canadian West and American faotories es- tablishing themselves in the Cana- dian East, the Dominion has rea- sons to feel fairly well satisfied.American tourists who came to scoff, have remained to spend, and there is a hearty respect for the country and its people among those from Uncle Samuel's territory who have taken the trouble to investi- gate. • Miss-:lli 'Witol a'1` zvm si •ed friends in .town, .A ball and sturppdx f t bealti ri the Oommcrcial Z].r., lt'' evening, Mr. 1Vi11iarn Ottawa is visiting and Mrs. H.
