The Old Fashioned Door Plate.
"Door plates are going out of fash-
ion, said a man whose business it
is to snake plates of all, kinds,
"Twenty years ago every man of prom-
inence had his name graven upon a
plate and that plate affixed to his
front door, that all might know who
dwelt within. The daily task of the
negro houseman was to rub the door
plate until it shone. It took the
place of the Lases and Penates of
the Romana, and was attended to
ust as caro.' ly as were the ancient
household gods,
"Everything is change- now,
though. I suppose the reassn Is that
people don't have homes as they
used to. They simply live in houses
and apartments and move around so
much that a door plate couldn't pos-
sibly endure the peripatetic existence.
A collection of brass door plates
screwed to the portal of a big apart-
ment building would, I confess, look
rather odd. --From the Louisville Cour-
ier -journal.

and being treated by a doctor who fail-
ed to give her relief, Airs. James H.
'White, a farmer's wife living near here,
is again a well woman. Dodd's Kidney
Pills cured her.
"Aly trouble started from a strain"
Mrs, White states, "I had a pain al-

in the back of my neck, and 1 had urin-

of annoyance.
"For four years I suffered in this way
and the doctor consulted did not do me

dizzy and I finally got so nervous 1
could not hold a cup.
"Then I started to use Dodd's Kidney

SUMMER RESORT WATER.
In all cases where pollution of the sup-
ply of drinking water is suspected, it
should be boiled for twenty minutes be-
fore using, Cool the water so treated by
placing iee around and not in the ves-
sel containing the water. By doing this,
possible pollution from using impure
ice will be avoided.
Many people do not like the "flat"
taste of boiled water. This eau be re-
moved by a simple process of aeration.
Tie several thicknesses of cheese cloth
over the jar containing the water that
has been boiled and place in the open
sir. In a little while it will be as sweet
and palatable as before treatment.

rounded by a number of small diameter
tubes similar to gas pipes, By means of
the apparatus fresh, dry, outside air en
tern constantly into the air supply tubes
and is highly heated in the tubes sur-
rounding the fire places. It ascends in
a dry, heated state in the room, passes
along the ceiling and ilsails, and ab-
sorbs the dampness, sinking down af-

re-entering the the apparatus.
It then mixes with the coke gases in
the outlet tube for the smoke, and even-
tually est apes into the chimney. This
constantly renewed, fresh, outside air
furnishes an abundance of carbonic acid
to the mortar, thus handening it and
predizcing in a short time the same ef-

There are several old bells in Scotland,
Ireland and Wales; the oldest are often

The curfew bell is that about which
most has been written and said. It has
been thought that it was only used in
England, but it was quite common on.
the continent in the middle ages.
The ringing of bells by rope is still
very poular in ]England, especially in the
country, where almost every hamlet,
however small, has its church with its
peal of bells, which are often remarkably
well rung. The first peal of bells in Eng-
land was sent by Pope Calixtus ill. to
King's College, Cambridge, and was for
three hundred years the largest peal in
England. About the beginning of the
year 1500 sets of eight bells were hung
in e. few of-. the large churches.
In the middle of the seventeenth cen-
tury a man named White wrote a fern-
ous work on bells, in which he intro-
duced thesystem of numbering them 1,
2, 3, 4, ete., on slips of paper in dif-
ferent orders, according to the changes
intended to be rung. It is calculated
that to ring ail the changes upon 24 bells
at two strokes a second would take 117
million years.
One of the most famous bells in the
world is the first great bell of Moscow,
which now stands in the middle of :a
square in that `city and is used as ,e,
chapel. This bell was east in 17.33, but
wits in the earth for more than a hun-
dred years, being raised in 1836 by the
Emperor Nicholas. It is nearly twenty
feet high, has a eireumferenee elf hlxty
feet, is two feet thick, and weighs almost
two bunched tons. 'The second it oaeq
bell, which is the largest tell in. the
world that is actusclly in use, weighs 128
tons. There are several bells extant
which weigh ten tong and over, of which
13ig' Ben, the . largest bell in Eng-
land, weighing between thirteen and
fourteen tons, is one. Big Bea is unfor-
tunately cracked.
