The notices of sale, which may be either printed or written, must be posted in at least three public places in the municipality and shall be conti- nued for three clear .clays. They must specify the time and place at which the animal will be sold. After all expenses of harboring and sale, which must not exceed $20, have been deducted the balance must be handed to the treasurer of the municipality. in case the lawful owner of the animal has not in the meantime been found.
