A GO€)D RULE, TOO
Hearing that a large boot and
shoe establishment was giving
away a present of a foot rule with
every pair of boots or shoes they
sold. Mooney told his wife about
the bargain. and said, as her shoes
were nearly worn out, he would
give her the money to buy a new
pair if she gave him the foot rule
when she returned.
His wife went to the shop, and
after great trouble got a pair to
please her. As she was leaving the
shopman gave her a shall box,
which, he said, contained a foot
rule.
She went borne delighted with
ber bargain, and gave the box to
ika,husband..
When he opened it, •to his dis-
gnst, instead of a foot rule, was a
slip of paper, oh which was written,
"Avoid tight shoes."

The Trumpets or May.

hark ! Hark ! Over hill and valley
The trumpets of May again ;
Round banners of spring time rally
The creatures in forest and glen.
Hark ! hark ! May's trumpets have
taken
The lead in a festival mirth,
Their vibrating notes awaken
The slumbering children of earth.
Hark ! Hark ! How the tones are
blending
With fragance of violets fair,
To bights of mercy ascending
Thy heart gods out in prayer.
"Who beauty to earth has 'given"
"And splendor to realms above.”
"Oh, grant me, dear Father in

"A spring of affectionate love."

DESTROYING THE INDEPEND
ENCE OP THE LEGISLATURE
Mr. Carnegie,, of East Victoria,
has resigned his seat in the Legis-
lature to accept an office under the
Whitney Government at Osgoode
Hall. The office is a mere sinecure
the duties consisting of selling le-
gal stamps—duties which could be
performed by a petty clerk.
This is the second occasion, since
the change of administration, on
which a member of the Assembly
has gone direct from his place in
the House to an office of emolument
given by the Ministry he had sup-
ported.
In all cases in which such an
event occurs a sound ino%ple is
violated, and the tat-0iti,ops on
which the independence Of an in-
dividnal member of the Legislature
rests are sapped. It is, for examp-
le, an utter impossibility for a
member'to take an absolutely un-
biassed view of the failure of the
Government to make good its
pledges in regard to the taxation
of railways. or its similar violation
of other pledges in regard to rail-
way bonuses, if he is all the time
expecting an office at the hands of
that Government -a form of reward
such as he knows is reserved only
for those who give unquestioning
obedience to the party whip.
It is an open secret that there
are members, still in the Legisla-
ture, who are looking for places
similar to those which Messrs.
Little and Carnegie have already
received. These Hien are not, can-
not be, representatives of the peop-
le. Their votes must be given and
their acts governed in many cases
with a view to the effect these will
have, not on promoting the inter-
ests of the country, or in carrying
Out the policy they were elected to
advance, but on the shaking of the
tree containing the plums they are
waiting for,
We have grown accustomed to
such practices at Ottawa, but the
Province did look for something,
better from Whitney,—Weekly
Sun.
