THE CRY OF THE TWD -THIRDS
One of the hardest things Ben
Hiltz had to bear theae days was
the, eight of pretty Helen DL,•untly.
She came to the store almost every
afternoon now to drive her hus-
band home in her own elegant
little equipage, with its . high step-
ping blooded steed as fast as the
fastest, yet as gentle as the lady
who sat behind it. The' sight of
that lovely girlish face happy and
blooming peeping out from its
setting of silks and sables was
something that quickened Ben's
breath, set his teeth and deepened
the fierceness in his eyes, what
right had Maurice Droutly's wife
to such youth, health and grandeur
while his wife grew paler and thin-
ner, a patient look of endurance
replacing the smile which one
played continually about her
beautified mouth, why was he so
poor, while his employer rolled in
wealth? He was fully aware that
his own habits were at the founda.
tion of all his misfortunes, of his
wife's woe ; that he earned enotigh
when working faithfully to put his
family far beyond want, and to Iay
up something against a time of
need. Did. not Mr. Droutly drink
also; drink often, steeply of his
expensive wines? why should thereat
be such distinction between them?
Helen had never injured him, 13er
crime was that she belonged to the
man in the office yonder who de,
served to be as poor and miserable
as himself. Moreover his employ
er was very proud of this woman.
His eyes shone at her approach, he
introduced her as "my wife" to the
senior partner and clerk, purposely
overlooking him, he would always
believe. tShe won admiration not
because the rich man could enhan-
ce her beauty by line settings, It
angered him to see the light spring
to every eye and the flush mantle
every cheek at the approach or
greeting of the lady ; for she al-
ways greeted the men she met on
her way to the office in a modest
yet cordial fashion. Tom Fullivan
when he stepped out to hold her
horse, lifted his old cap and bowed
with a homage worthy of a queen,
and when she and her husband
rode off together came back to his
work with a look of conscious ex,
altation on his face, as exasperat-
ing to Ben as it seemed to be ridioul
ous. Tim was a character in his
way. Imagine if you please, a
short, thin, old looking Youngman,
with a dried up sort of a face, hay,
ing a tendency to wrinkles, and
tiny, twinkling gray eyes, a big
mouth generally a broad grin, and
showing an exceptionally fine set
of teeth, and you nave some idea
of Tim. To complete the portrait
add a snub nose, and a shock of
red hair, altogether he had a wag-
gish look, very amusing everybody
laughed at and with Tim, and he
laughed at and with everybody.
His very presence was cheering, he
had the faculty of seeing the best
side of the worst thing, and it was
contagious, he was a sort porter,
janitor, man -of -all -work for the
firm of Spoffard and Droutly, and
highly valued. Few guessed that
he ever had a care or a sorrow of
his own. "idiot :" Bon growled as
the young .Irishman came in where
he was one afternoon after having
watched the lady and her husband
drive gayly off "Idiot" .Anyone
would suppose it was something in
your pocket, all this show, "Its no-
thing out of it" replied the man
cheerily •'Nor in it" snapped Ben.
it was nearer the man than the
pocket, lad, said Tim gravely. "Its
me heart that's right glad to see
Mester Droutly wicl a bit ov an
angel beside him. She'll do him
