Mr. Milne Rennie, leader of the
Evangelical church choir, enter-
tained the members on Thursday
evening last. The affair passed off
very pleasantly and included a
dainty supper, provided by Mr.
Rannie's sisters.
Mr. Cornie Holtzman, who has
been employed in Hartleib's store
for some time left for Berlin, to
take a course in the Business Col-
lege.
Captain Frank Granville and
wife of Chatham, are visiting at
the home of the latter's parents,

On the evening of Jan. 1st, Miss
Lydia Faust's Sunday school class,
met at her house. It was indeed a.
great surprise to Miss Faust. Miss
Agnes Kaeroher read an address,
and Miss Laura Hartleib presented
her with a beautiful jardinere.
Miss Faust very ably responded,
and kindly thanked them for the
present and for the appreciation of
her work done as teacher for so
many years. The evening was
pleasantly spent in music, and

and a beautift'al gold headed cane,
that was given to Bial tit the pro-
per moment by Mrs:'Fw Hess Sr.
Rev. C. C. J. Maass sash in replying
to the presentation. that lie was
pleased with suov',a display of good
will between the mennbers or the
society and himself. Et concluded
his remarks by thankhn; the mem-
bers for the generous treatment he
had received at their f Bands since
the organization of the society.
FREDERICK DEMUTH
The funeral of the hate Mr. Fred-
erick Demuth, on Sunday, was
very largely attended. the Lutheran
church being crowded to capacity,
Rev. Mr. Maass the pastor, add.res- .
sed the congregation in German
and English. The deceased was in
the 54th year of his age. and will
be mach missed by ourcitizens, he
being ono of. the early settlers. Mr.
William Demuth., of Port Arthur,
a brother, Mr. Fred Demuth of
Detroit, only son of deceased, Mrs.
Meston of Barrie, a daughter, and
Mr. Meston were here to attend
the funeral.
Tho late Mr. Demuth was born
at Gahan, Hessen,. Germany, an
Aug. 35th 1845, and came to Canada
with his parents in the :year 1855,
settling shortly after in this Vil-
lage. The living relatives, arc
his brothers Justus, of Ashland
Vis., William of Port Arthur. Ont.
and sister, Lizzie Gronk, also of
Ashland. 'The children aro Bangle
Meston of l3aarrie, Maggio of St.
• Lour and Fred of Detroit. He is :
