`Phe I3usineos Instinet Uppermost
In a Perilous Situation.
It is not hard to keep from being
fleeced if you are only sufficiently in
earnest about it. In an article in
the Wide World Magazine, Mr.
Malcolm Savage Treacher tells the
story of a German mountain climber
who did not forget to bo economical,
even in the midst of deadly peril.
A party was crossing a glacier on
the slope of Mont Blanc wheu one
of the travellers called to the others
to stop and listen. Strange cries
cane from. the ice beneath their
feet:
"Some one has fallen into a. cre-
vasse 1" exclaimed one of the party.
"His groans seem to indicate that
he is already beyond help."
"We must do what we can, in any
case," responded one of the guides;
and he Bogan a long and perilous
descent into what proved to be the
bottom of a concealed crevasse. At
the bottom they found the poor
gentleman who had fallen. He was,
however, quite unhurt, sitting tom-
fortably upon a bench of ice.
"We've come to save you," said
one of the guides.
"You save me ?" answered the
gentleman, quite tranquilly. "How
do you know I want to be saved?"

The Bounds of Strength May Now
Be Ascertained.
Professional fatigue can be., mea-
sured from the variation of the
tracing or sketch of the movements
of the heart. According to the ex-
periments of Jules Amer, explained
by Professor Dastre, it has been
seen that as the power developed by -
the muscles increases, the form of
the cardiograms is changed. Their
summit becomes more and more
pointed. The undulation on the
right, that is supplied by the con-
traction of the heart, lowers pro-
gressively. After the contraction,
that drives back the blood, an as-
piration is produced, the value of
which goes on increasing. In all
works of strength, careering of bur-
dens up stairs, fatiguing walling,.
running, work with the •hammer,
Mr. Amar has noticed curves that
have an aspect identical to the phy-
siological limit of fatigue.

Halifax Sends Out a Message of Help
to Many People.
Halifax, N.S., Dec. 15.—When inter-
viewed at her home at 194 Argyle St.,
Mrs. Haverstock was quite willing to
talk of her peculiarly unfortunate case.
"I was always `blue' and depressed,
felt weak, languid and utterly unfit
for any work. My stomach was so'
disordered that I had no appetite.
What I did eat disagreed. I suffered
greatly from dizziness and sick head-
ache and feared a nervous breakdown.
'Upon my druggist's recommendation
I used Dr. Hamilton's Pills.
"I felt better at once. Every day I
improved'. In *six weeks 'I was a well
woman, cured completely after differ
eat physicians had failed to help` me.
It is for this reason
that tI
strongly
urge sufferers with stomach or diger
tive troubles to use Dr. Hamilton's
Pills."
Dr. Hamilton's Pills strengthen the
stomach, improve digestion, strength-
en the nerves and restore debilitated
systems to health. By cleansing the
blood of long-standing impurities, by
bringing the system to a high point
of vigor, they effectually chase away
weariness, depression and disease.
Good for young or old, for men, for
women, for children. AB dealers sell

OIL UPON TROUBLED WATERS.
Secret of Phenomenon is That It
Is Extremely Viscous.
Literally as well as figuratively,
to pour oil upon the troubled wa-
ters is to calm them to a degree.
This has been known from time im-
memorial, although its scientific ex-
planation is • not any too familiar
even at the present' day. The se-
cret of the phenomenon lies in the
fact that oil is extremely viscous.
That is to say, it is of a, ropy eon-
sistency, sticky and adhesive, and
can be spread out into a very thin
bub comparatively strung sheet.
In lubricating a bearing, for in-
stance, it forms a tenuous film be—
tween the metals and so protects
them from the wear of direct con-
tact with each other.
Oil is lighter than water, and
when poured upon it, remains upon
thesurfaee. As the surface ten-
sion of water is stronger than that
of oil, the oil is immediately drawn
ont over the water in a very, thin
body, forming a sort of blanket,
which presents considerable resist-
ance to the motions of the ,element
beneath. The water waves still roll
almost as high as before, "blit they
are unable to break into ripples, so
that, the stormy sea, when oil -cover-
ed, presents a surface of huge un-
dulations,, but smooth ones.
Ships are ablate ride such waves
with comparative ease. It is the
waves >that break that present the
real 'clanger, to the mariner,

Courage and Spirit }Imre Always
Beep Extolled.
We moderns are popularly 'sup-
posed to have been the first; to pro-
fess' admiration for the strong-
minded wcnnan, tvhopn we, 'proudly
or derisively call the ''new" wo-
man, Yet if we study history, and
not .merely hearsay, we find that
the heroines of the world were by
no means gentle, submissive ereat-
u•res.
Electra., whom the ancients ex-
alted far above her milder sister
Ohre+sothemis, would certainly have
been a suffragette, had ehe 'lived in
this century, leer sense of justice
was so developed as well as her
powers of imperious persuasion.
Cleopatra, Hynatia, Joan of Are,
however diverse otherwise, were at
least alike in rebelling against au-
thority and following their own
way.
Rowena. would have seemed more
attractive •1iad she eloped with
Ivanhoe, and we all prefer the nob-
ler Rebecca, who nearly died a mar-
tyr because she was among the first
lady doctors.
From time immeniorial courage
and spirit have been extolled, and
justly so, too. People who feel
deeply cannot always be passive.
They wish to control destiny, not to
be controlled by it, and sometimes
they actually eucceecl. in their de-
sire, through their very refusal, to
accept the inevitable.
Obedience is apt to be often over-
rated virtue -which may be the re-
sult of indifference or laziness, a
mere craving for peace at any price,
instead of a genuine and unselfish
hunility.

institution is growing. Tickets are
