Peat Make the Mistake of Not Shutting Off the Draught. The experimental work which was carried on under the 'direction of Dr. +agent Martel, head of the -Mines Department, in regard to the proper manufacture of peat has pro- ven so successful that there are now two private concerns producing peat, at Alfred, Ont., and Farn- ham, P.Q,, and the output does not begin to meet the demand, While coal is becoming dearer all the time, peat should become cheaper. There is hope of reduced freight charges and also of devising cheaper methods of manufacture. Inquiry has been made of hundreds of people who have used the peat made according to the method re- commended .by the Department of Mines, in the factory, for grates and also for cooking. Some find it not so satisfactory for fur- naces, but the trouble seems to be to educate the users of peat to shut off the draught. It is a fuel that leaves so clinkers, burns with a a great heat and will burn up too quickly unless the draught is hacked. Costly Experiment. It is said that nearly a million ollars was thrown away on experi- ents in the manufacture of peat in anada by people who did not un- erstand how to dry the fuel pro- erly. These were usually by the mployment of great pressure in rder to eliminate the moisture. It vas only when the government porn- 'ssion was sent over to Germany, weden, Russia and the other peat - sing countries, to learn the sun nd wind take the moisture out. After the government had shown he practicability of producing a rood quality of peat at a saleable price it was left to private enter - rise to continue the work. The t is now sold in Ottawa at $5 a or $3 a ton on the car at Al-. The difference of $2 is made r • e of 30 cents a ton for st of distrZation part. 1 id, the doxnand, et at the present time; r as the plant at. Alfred is corned the output will be con- iderably increased next season by eking an earlier start and getting he machinery "tuned up" sooner, aid also probably by using electric c light at night and working 24 lours a day for the hundred days hich is about the limit of time dur- ug which the manufacture can be ell carried on in a cool climate like his. 1 e s S ie ilt re Big Possibilities. There is another splendid possi- ility in connection with the peat dustry that has been worked out accessfully in Germany and Swe- en, and which will no doubt be ealized here in time. It is the pro- uction of gas and,. indirectly, elec Heal energy from the peat. At the fuel testing plant in Otta- a the mines department has an 0 h.p. gas producer engine which operated from the gas produced rom the peat. Engines up to 250 .p. can be run successfully in the ame way. Dr. Haanel states that here is no reason why sections of he central peat producing parts of 1anada where water power is not vailable could not obtain power y the simple establishment of a eries of gas -producer .engines. +lectrical energy could be develop - d for light and power purposes, or factories in town, or mechanical perations'on the. farms. In Germany, he states, power and ght produced in this way are car- -.ea as far as forty miles. The armors of any district, he added, ould with a capital of about $7,- 000 erect a plant for the manufac- ture of peat to provide them with peat, and a further outlay would enable them to provide power as well. Power thus developed locally would, as compared with water power, save all the overhead charges and also the loss in trans- mission. ►k Different Adornments. First Two ]lours of Day Right En- sures Success of Whole Day, A few years ago the startling as- sertion of Dr. Osler, that the use- fulness of life ended at 60 years of age, amazed the world. The asser- tion did not check the energetic young fellows of 60 from going right ahead and doing things. The doc- tor may have intended that his ut- terances should be taken in a scien- tific Pickwickian sense, for in meeting him one would never be- lieve him responsible for such a grim edict. Now that Dr.' Osler is himself approaching the "age lim- it," he may modify his original stestemeut and with the .ji.q'nors of keigjrihood r'thick upon him," Sir William t)sler may take a. brighter purview of long life as the sunset of 60 approacahes' according to the National Magazine. One bit of philosophy lately ad- vanced by Dr. Ostler deems destined to live to bear good fruit. There is no use, he remarks, in worrying about yesterday and to-morrow— to-day is what we must 'take care of. When one stops to think of it, most of our real worries come from regrets for misspent yesterdays or from apprehensions or possibly un- happy to -morrows, little realizing that between the sunset and sun- rise of to -day lie all-important and imperative duties. Dr. Osler in- sists that when one starts the day with the first two hours going right, smooth sailing for all day- is fore - Toasted to a Golden Brown ! Sounds "smacking good," doesn't it? Presently another individual ap- peared on the scene and politely asked Pat what he was doing. "Fishing," was the laconic retort, The stranger laughed, "Pray what is the use of fishing under the bridge while such an infernal- noise continues 7" "Oh, shut up, man," replied Pat, indignantly. As soon as Zam•Buk is ap- plied to a wound or to a diseased part, the cells•''beneath the skin's sur- face are so stimulated that new healthy tissue is quickly formed. This forming of fresh healthy tissue front below is Zam-Buk's secret of healing. The tissue thusformed is worked up to the surface and literally casts off the diseased tissue above It. This is why Zam-13uk puree are permanent. Flo, Try the Deep Breathing Clue For It. In the season when coughs and ,colds are prevalent any method of preventing them and checking the first symptoms without drugs may be of inestimable value, says a physician. When you find you have a cough, and before it gets to be deep-seated, go into the air and practice deep breathing. Draw air into the lungs until they are completely distended, raising , the arms above the head during inspiration to more fully ex - and the chest. Hold the air in the gPfor a. few seconds; then tlac„it out slowly. Repeat the f z'a't;icns 'a 'do'ten tithes- or'°lmore,. ad after an hour try' it 'again. ":Persistency in this treatment will often cure a newly -contracted cough in a few hours. If the cough it of long standing, pain may be felt under the shoulder -blades and across the chest during the breath- ing, but, as this is caused by the tearing away of adhesions of the lung tissue, it will usually pass away in a day or two, and the fact that it is felt shows that the lungs need thorough inflation. • Eugenics. The wife of a missionary long stationed in Africa confessed re- cently that she became• hysterical with suppressed laughter at the first service that her husband held at the -station after bringing her out. She had, indeed, .to leave the chapel lest, she should disgrace her - .self by an outburst of an unseemly mirth. The cause of h-er, discomfiture was an important convert, an aged and venerable• chief, with snowy wool and' a countenance of ferocious dig- nity. Th -e young wife had thrown away the day before an outgrown pair of her tiny daughter's ankle ties. They were of a, gay scarlet morocco, and when they reappeared at church buttoned neatly through the distended lobes of the old chief's ears and dangling conspicu- ously against his withered ebony shoulders the speetaole was to', much for her ---especially in combi- nation with the rest of his costume, which consisted of a dirty blue Ioin cloth and a, headdress made of fes, thers artistically combined 'with imported shirt buttons. We have all read and heard of the agonies of sciatica, but only those who have been tortured by this dread mal- ady can fully appreciate what it must mean to be cured after years of suffer- ing. It is because he feels it his solemn duty to tell to the world his faith in Nerviline that Victor P. Hires makes the following declaration, "For three years I was in the Royal Mail service, and in all kinds of weather had to beet the night trains. Dampness, cold, and exposure brought on sciatica :Mat' affected my lett side. Sometimes an attack would conte on that made me powerless to work. I was so near- ly a complete cripple that I had to give up my job. I was in despair, completely cast down, because the money I had spent on trying to get well was wasted, I was speaking to my chemist one day, and ho recom- mended 'Nerviline.' I had this good liniment rubbed on several times a day, and got relief. I continued this treatment four months and was cured. I have used all kinds of liniments, and can t.ruthfuIly say that Nerviline is far stronger, more penetrating and infin- itely better than anything else for re- lieving pain. I urge everyone with lumbago, neuralgia, rheumatism, or sciatica, to use Nerviline. I know it will cure them."
