which imposes a fine of $800 or a
yeses -imprisonment to anyone who
through carelessness or otherwise tak-
es mail from the post office not belon-
ing to hien, and fails to return it im-

In August's official bank statement
an item of interest is total circulation
which increased about one million
dollars over a year ago. The increase
during the month was $6,693,508.
The excess this year is clue largely to
the movement of the western crop
which is nearly a month earlier than
usualy this year. Total circulation
for the month was $105,806,814,
Business deposits showed a fair in-
crease of nearly two million for the
.:months, while saving deposits fell
off over two millions. Total deposits
were nearly' twenty seven milli.onsless
than they were a year ago. Call loans
in Canada were reduced nearly 'eight
million since last year, while 'those
outside Canada were. twenty five mil-
lion less. This was partly balanced
.by increased current loans within
Canada, where all the money avail-
able was needed, Total deposits in
Canada were $977,000,000 while cur-
rent loans in Canada were,,`, 668,000,-
000. Loans to municipalities were
e41,31.0,000 for A:tgnst.
