LORD KITCHENER'S REPORTS
ON EGYPT'S PROGRESS.
Results of Balkan War Shocked the
People ---Optimistic Future
For the Soudeus
Lord Kitchener's reports from
Egypt, and particularly the last to
hand, reveal the wonderful progress
that Egypt has made in developing
the resources of the country.
As regards the political situation,
Lord Kitchener notes that the ob-
servations made by his last report
have apparently borne fruit.
"There has been a marked dimin
ution of party feeling and party
strife, and I notice indications of
greater confidence in the Govern-
ment, particularly among the silent
mass of the people. I hope I am
not too .optimistic in considering
these to be signs that in the near
future the population will again be
closely united, and while placing
personal interests aside, -will en-
deavor to work loyally for the com-
mon good and to further the real
interests of their country."
Effects of the Balkan War.

ANTS BAKE 'BISCUITS.
Scientist Discovers • Seceies That
Understands Cookery.
The extraordinary habits of the
harvester ant have long been
known to naturalists. Certain spe-
cies not only harvest and store in
granaries the seeds upon which
they 'iced, but actually plant and
cultivate an annual crop of their
food seeds.
Still more remarkable stories are
told of an ant that is common in
Dalmatia, the Messer bather -as.
According to Dr. Neger of the
Dresden Forestry School, this ant
not only cuts leaves and gathers
seeds, hue actually makes bread or
biscuit l The seeds are first sprout-
ed, then carried into the sun and
dried, then taken back to the under-
ground chambers, where they are
chewed into a dough. The dough
is then finally made into tiny cakes,
which are baked in the sun, then
carefully stored for. future use.
From 'these observations it would
appear that the art of cookery is
not confined to the human race. All
eaokiing is done by the sun, whether
in the ripening of fruit or in the
baking of bread in a stove. The
heat obtained from fuel is simply
stored up sunlight set free.
The Arab and the native Mexican
speak of ripe fruit as fruit which
has been 000ked in the sun. The
ant has somehow learned the art op
sun cookery, the saliva with which
it moistens the, grain probably tak-
ing the place of yeast and sweeten-
ing through changes set up by its
influence upon starch..

THE DANGER
OF ANEMIA
Consumption May Follow Unless its
Lavages are Booked
'There is danger to every girl and
every woman who falls a:' victim to
anaemia that is bloodlessness.
They'beoome listless; feel 'too weak,
too wretched and :too hopeless to
take prompt steps to stop the trou-
ble. TOO often, through neglect,
they drift into a worse condition,
forgetting that anaemia, frequently
lends on to consumption. If you
&ere..anaemic in the least degree you
should lose no time in beginning
treatment to increase and enrich
the blood supply: To do this there
-is no other medicine so good as
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, Every
dose helps make rich, red blood,
which drives out disease and brings
a.giain the bloom of health to pale
and sallow cheeks. There are 'thou -
sande of women and growing girls
in Canada who owe their present
good health to the timely use of
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. Among
those who have been restored to
health by this great medicine is
Miss .hose Neville, Mount Forest,
Ont., -who says, "Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills performed almost amir-
acle in my case. I was a victim of
anaemia, in what my friends con-
sidered a dangerous form. I was
very pale, always' felt tired out,
existed in the world.
"The effects of the war were
deeply felt here, and its results
name as a shock to the population.
Following the example set in the
case of the Turko-Italian war,
Egypt maintained neutrality, but
the people showed their sympathy
far the Mohammedan combatants by
organizing and contributing liber-
ally to a ?cad -Crescent Society, as
well as ler a general subscription to
assist TItrkey in her need. The peo-
ple of 'Egypt have behaved during
the war with complete self-control,"
Irrigation Policy.
Lord Kitchener deals at some
length with the Government's irri-
gation policy, and outlines the
bather developments in oontenipla
tion. His general conclusions are:
"(i.) That the epeessary supply of
irrigzl.tion. water'for the-. present
greatly extended area of cultivation
is assured,
"(2) That sufficient water for all
probable extension in the delta dur-
ing 'the next fifteen years is also
assured, except in the event of a
very low summer river.
"(3) That, as it is advisable to al-
low some extension of 'perennial
cultivation in upper Egypt and to
meet the demands for water for ex-
tended cultivation in the delta in
years of low supply, fresh 'works will
be necessary to increase the quan-
tity available for distribution. The
proposed dam on 'the White Nile
will, it is expected, be sufficient for
this purpose."
Lord Kitchener takes an optim-
istic view of the future of the Sou-
dan, holding that "a very prosper-
ous and brilliant future undoubted-
ly awaits the country.'."

"GOOD MEDICINE."
Pain -Killer Bottles Were Used as
Idols in Burma.
A missionary recently returned
from Burma with an amusing story
of the exaltation of a dozen patent -
medicine bottles to the rank of
idols fervently worshipped by a
whole village.
On one of this lady's tours, she
passed through a small settlement
where cholera was raging. She had
with her several bottles of a fam-
ous "ready relief" for pain; so she

It is always leap= -year for reign-

first advances, for their position is
such that no Iran of inferior rank
may venture : to propose marriage
to one of them. Aceordingly, Queen
Victoria proposed to Prince Albert.
How she did.it, she herself tells in
her recently published memoirs:
At about half past twelve o'clock
I sent for Albert. He same to the
closet where I was alone, and, af-
ter a few moments, I said to him
that I thought he must be aware
that I wished him to come here,
and that it would make me too
happy if he would consent to what;
I wanted—to marry me. We em-
braced each ether, and he was so
kind and affectionate!
I told him that I was quite un-
worthy of him. He said he would
be very happy, and was so kind,
and seemed so happy that I really
felt it was the happiest, brightest
moment in my life. I told him it
was a great sacrifice, which he
would not allow.
I then told him of the necessity
of keping it a secret, except to his
father and uncle Leopold aiid Volk -
mar, to whom he said he would
send a courier the next day, and
.also that it was to be as early as
the beginning of February. I then
told him to fetch Ernest (the Duke
of Cumberland), which he did, and
he congratulated us both, and
seemed very happy.
I feel the happiest of human be-
ings!
