``IlloliatnYnetl" Grasped
Method.
Some of the most extraordinary
experiments on record, regarding
the resources of animals' intelli-
gence, and more especially of
horses' psychology, have taken
place in Elberfeld, Germany, under
the lead of a Herr Krell, a wealthy
merchant of that city, and tale au-
thor of a book on 'Thinking Ani-
mals."
Herr Krall has stehieved an amaz-
ing, almost incredible feat. He has
-,t2.ught a complete alphabet to two
horses;; and :furthermore, has turn-
ed these two animals into trained
mathematicians, for they can ex-
tract the squareand cube roots of
any nember one chooses to suggest.
ANOTHER 'EXPERIMENT.
The Elberfeld merchant was one
of the greatest enthusiasts about
the striking achievements of the
once -famous Hans, the "speaking -
horse" which created iso great a fu-
rore in. Berlin several years ago,
when it was shown in a local circus.
He pia, rchased Hans, and for many
monteas studied the animal. Final-
ly,bc;ing unable to disoover the res-
tion why Hans could speak and
count, he decided to start the whole
experiment afresh. He bought two
young Arab stallions, Zariff and
Mohammed, and taught them as
though they were children. ,,,This
tuition lasted three years.
TAUGHT THEM TO COUNT.
The first part of Herr Kra11's
task was to teach his two horses
how to count. He tried a system of
his own invention, which consists
in ordering the horse to count tens
with its left' front foot, units with
its right front foot, and hundreds
with •its left again. For instance,
Herr. Krall writes on a blackboard
the number "42," and presents the
board to Zariff and Mohammed,
okaying, "What is that figure?" The
horses immediately knock their left
front foot four times on the pave-
ment and then, after a short pause,
knock their right front foot twice,
four representing the ten's, and two
the ones. Hence, 42, To this sys-
tem, Herr Krell added zero, which
has a special sign—the horses mov-
ing: their Beads slowly from left to
raght.
LETTERS MEANT NUMBERS.
Then came the study of an alpha
bet. Herr Kroll again invented a
system according to which each let-
ter is represented by a convention-
al number, which the animal must
remember. D means 32, E means
11, G means 33, and so on. To ex-
press the. letter E, for instance, the
1orr;es knock their left front foot
once, and then, after the usual
pause, 'their right front foot once
also. TMs way of knocking, aecord-
ing to the aforesaid system of
counting, means "11" (one ten and
one unit), and "11," represents the
vowel E. "Yes" and "no" are ex-
pressed by special head movements.
And thus the system is complete.
MIUSHROOMS KILL SIXTEEN.
Other French People Ill From Eat -
Ing Poisonous Fungi.
Deaths from poisonous mush-
rooms are reported in France daily.
The roll for last month, for in-
stance, is fourteen workmen dead
and three dying in the Vosges. One
workman is dead at Nancy, three
ate dangerously ill. A family of
five has been poisoned. at Versailles,
one having, died, while the four
others are in a hospital.
• The extraordinarly thing is that
experts in fungi every year warn
against the deadly danger of certain
mushrooms, but without avail.
They repeat yearly that the time-
honored tests, such as boiling the
mush:rooins with a silver spoon, are
of no use whatever ; for in this par-
ticular case the most deadly of all
fungi, it seems, do not turn the
spoon black.
Another remarkable circumstance
is that only one species of mush-
room is really deadly, but then it
is so deadly thatone fragment in a
dial will suffice. Other. bad kipds
oI mushrooms merely make the eat-
er feel queer, and he generally re-
covers.

Sores Disfigured So He Dreaded to

one week's time the disease had spread so
rapidly over my face and throat and the
burning itching sores became so painful that
I began to seek relief in different medicines,
but none seemed to give me any relief. The
sores disfigured my face to such an extent
that I dreaded to appear in public.
"I suffered terribly and could get no rest

to try the Cuticura Remedies. I had bout
given up hope, but thought I would have
one more, try, and so I used a little Cuticura
Ointment, and it helped me from the start.
I continued using it and in six weeks' time
was completely eared, and can say L would
advise anyone suffering from skin' disease
to use Cuticura Ointment, as it is the best
healing balm in the world." (Signed) Roscoe

HAD BAD SORE POUR YEARS
Zam-Buk Has Healed It!
Mrs. Wilson, 110 Wickson Ave.,
Toronto, says: "About four years
ago a sore spot appeared on the
right side of my face. This spot in-
-creased in size until it became
about half an inch in diameter and
very painful. I went to a doctor,
but the ointment he gave me did
not have any good effect. The sore
continued to discharge freely, and
was most painful. I bad it outer;
ized, tried poultices, and all kinds
of salves, but it -'was no good, and
I continued to suffer from it for
four years!
"A sample of Zam-Buk was one
day given to me, and I used it. Al-
tho igh the quantity was so small,
it seemed to do me some good, so
I purchased a further supply.
"Each box did me more and
more good, and, to my delight, be-
fore I had been using Zam-Buk
three weeks, I saw that it was go-
