Fire Rings of Air—Would Cause.
Enemy's Aeroplane to
'Fall.
Air warfare is sure to introduce
the new form of ammunition known
as thevortex ring. One vessel,
says Pearson's Weekly, will fire a
ring of air at its rival, making the
aeroplane fall' to earth.
Last March an official telegram
from Rome announced the destruc-
tion of ten Arabs by bombs at Ben-
ghazi, these being the first victims
cf. aerial„warfare. Looking forward
into the future, it is safe to ,,pro-
phesy that the havoc wrought by
airmen in battle will be appalling
0-e this branch of modern warfare
`f is perfected.
One of the .airxnan'as first objects
in battle will undoubtedly be to rise
above his opponent, and a duel of
'hostile aeroplanes will resemble the
`flight of a hawk and heron when
apposed to one another. Both will
climb up to 'the highest possible
altitude, and from there attempt to
hurl the other down to destruction
below.
A .very deadly form of attack may
uteri be employed by the uppermost
machine. Here one aeroplane has
Managed to rise above its enemy
and the airmen above from their
superior position drop out alength
:of steel wire, which becomes en-
tangled in the ether's propeller,
with the result that the aeroplane
below and all contained therein are
immediately dashed to earth from
AN ENORMOUS HEIGHT.
As soon as the wire touches the
enemy's propeller the airmen above
let go their end, which twists itself
around and around into one hope-
less' entanglement, the ends of the
wire acting as whips and cutting to
iece's everything they strike.
It is probable that a small bomb
will be invented for the use of air-
ien when 'fighting as I have des-
ribed, the , bomb being dropped
rem above by the .machine that has
limbed 'highest. For it must be -

nether invention which I expect
ill take the form of a light, auto
-
able quick -firing gun, with a
ange of about half a mile, and
hrowing a small bullet. If the ex -
rt air -gunner of the future man-
ges to disable his opponent with
ne of these bullets, his own ma, -
bine will, of course, at once take
he higher position, when his op-
nent's destruction ahould be as -
tired.
But ane of the most ghastly pos-
ibilities of the future is a possible
ew and almost deadly form of am-
unition — light, invisible, and
ether on the lines of wireless tele-
raphv. I mean the vortex ring,
hich has been fired from one aero -
lane and has utterly overwhelmed
the enemy. These rings will take
the form of
FIERCE AIR EDDIES,
and direotly the hostile aeroplane
,enters one of these whirlpools of
he air it will be spun round and
round, and utterly destroyed long
before its remnants reach the
earth. Add to all this the fact' that
its discharge. will be quite silent,
and you have a truly fearful fea-
ture which will probably distin-
guish the air war of the future.
There is another way in which
eroplaaes.' will, ' I think, work
frightful havoc ' among their eve
tries, Here an army is encamped
at night, with here. and there a cer-
tain amount Of light showing, which
is of course, inevitable in the ease'
df encampment. The hostile aero-
planes observe these lights from
'afar, and determine to destroy their
enemy in the ' darkness, Suppose
that there are 100 aeroplanes, and
that each one is capable of deliver-
ing only four shells an hour, their
base being ten miles distant, we
have 400. shells dropped upon that
army in one hour out of the dark-
ness overhead, by an enemy who
cannot be seen. Surely a form of
attack •sufficiently demoralizing to
destroy the nerve of even the, brav-

LONDON STREET PERILS.
Authorities Anxious Over Growing
Nuiuber of Accidents.
The alarming increase in the
number of street accidents in Lon-
don,
ondon, England, is attracting the at-
tention of the authorities.
In 1881 there were 127 persons
killed and 3,400 injured in the
streets. of London. Ten years later,
while the horse •still held undisput-
ed sway, the numbers had grown to
147 and 5,837 respectively, a total
increase in the year of 2,257 acci-
dents.
With the advent of motor power
the increase became more rapid.
In 1901 there were 9,383 persons
killed and injured. At the end of
1910 the number of accidents had
more than doubled, the. total num-
ber being 17,927.
Whereas at the beginning of the
century the old horse cabs, were
running down between thirteen
hundred and fourteen hundred per-
sons a year and killing only a dozen
or so, motor cabs Ito -day are killing
between thirty and forty a. year and
injuring approximately. 2,000.
The .motor -omnibus is a greater
peril still, for wherses1e old
horse-drawn Vehicle- *killed ataty-
tzvo persons and injured 503 in 1901,
the motor -omnibus to -day is the
cane of more than a thousand ac-
ciaents and is killing three ' gimes
the number of its predecessor.
Horse-drawn carts, vans and car-
riages (exclusive Dabs and omni-
buses) are still, however, sufficient-
ly numerous to be the greatest
source of danger, for they kill be-
tween eighte and ninety persons
every year in London, and injure
between. four .and five thousand.

that creative work done in the•
country is decidedly better than
that done in the town. Describing
his methods, he states ` 1 do my
work between eleven and one
o'clock in the morning and five and
seven in the evening. The two
hours before dinner are the best in
the day, but I generally get my
ideas when I first awake in the
morning. This is all very common-
place, but it is true. My experi-
ence tells me that you can do, in

do a bad da.y's work in seven. That

cost a precious life. 'Get the Tab-

medicine ever introduced for dys-

summer complaints, sea sickness,

never fails to effect a positive cure.

—When the undigested food lies in
the stomach it thrones off gases
causing pains and oppression in the
stomachic region. The belching or

them is to restore the stomach to
proper action. Parmelee's Vege-

rections go with each packet and a
course of them taken systematically
is certain to effect a cure.
