According oto. the • London Daily Express, the recent .eapid inoreaso of gambling hells in London has reached the proportion of a grave scandal, which the police, although i apparently aware cif,,. what is going on,n.:' are taking niveasures to check. There are over a score of houses in Mayfair and Belgravia where all night gambling is indulged in by society persons of both sexes and of $11 ages. Many youngsters, includ- ing the sons of men of rank and Tosition, are inveigled to these hells end loss at baccarat, roulette, and ether games of chance, sume which Nleir parents are called upon to pay in order to avoid scandals. A dukes son recently lost $20,000 and a peer's son lost $2,500 in a week. A lad fresh from Eton was fandueed to play and lost $2,000. ,IIis mother had to redeem his 1 0 U's. Three ;sons of a woman well known in soeiety were drawn into the hells. She is responsible for some of the disclosures, made. BIG MONEY IN PERCENTAGE. At many of these "social" clubs as percentage of the stakes goes to the persons running them. The proprietor of a gambling house near Berkeley Square .admitted recently that he cleared $75,000 out of these Jpercentages alone. There is no difficulty in obtaining sidmittance. Many baccarat houses issue a gilt edged invitation to men I •:and women who are known to "like a game." There is, of course, no mention of baccarat on the cards, but the recipients of the invitations , usually know what they signify. 11 One woman, whose name is well I known in racing circles, invites those she meets on the turf and at I her sporting club to a. "champagne r' supper." Those who get the invi- tation know what it means. The champagne .supper is prolonged in- to a baccarat game, which lasts until 6 a.m. if the guests will .stay to play. 4 WO1VIE1`t GAMBLER.S.,. _ eestrat. r; an e • all in © siatfall hours, after the theatres and res- taurants are dosed, taxicabs and automobiles bring bevies of women gamblers, mould with the brightest names, to these private• houses for a `[mild flutter." A man who is familiar with these es,tablislinlents says: "One of the most interesting of these baccarat 1 houses is in New Cavendish Street. It is the surgery of a well-known medical men, who presumably lends it for the purpose of the parties. The scene there, the last view I had when I visited it, was the strangest you can imagine in such -a setting. "The play took place in the larg- ,, .est waiting -room, in which, as is usual in such apartments, the large centre table is littered with boelks and papers in the daytime for the waiting patients. In the surgery and consulting rooms leading from it there were eases of medical in- struments and books of the doctor's Library, just as they had been left after his last consultation of* the day. "These things struck a bizarre • note in the night's. play. The wait- ing -room table had been cleared of books and papers, chairs.had been drawn up around it, and a banker, with the 'shoe' from which the bac- earat cards are dealt in front of flim, was calling on other players to stake. There were nearly fifty guests at this fnidnight medical party, crowded together in these t irooms, and all were taking keen delight in the game and its pro gress and anxiously watching their turn to play. EVEN STATESMEN INDULGE. "At two of the best houses, both mansions in Mayfair, the appoint- ments are as fine as in the home of a wealthy peer, •and everything is done quietly and in the best form because of the distinguished elien- tele. • I have seen at one of these parties .a number of officers of the Quards, young men - of means, and' members of Parliament and peers, • di ive up 'for to Iittle game. • GOOD- REASON. If people would only use Zara - Bilk for chronic sores, blood -poison, site., before permitting an opera tion, scores of limbs would be saved. Mr. Robt. Patterson of North Pel- hani, Welland Co., Ont., writes: "My daughter, Annie, had blood - poison in her finger. The doctor operated twice on the finger, but did not obtain the desired result, and a third operation was consid- ered necessary. "Three doctors were present at this operation, but after it had been performed the wound did not heal. Try as we would we -could not get anything to close the wound. "We at last'tried Zam-Buk, and it was really wonderful to watch how this balm healed the wound. Each day there was a marked im- provement. First the wound in the palm of the hand closed, and then the finger which had been bad so long began to heal. The diseased flesh seemed to rise out of the wound and then drop off, and new healthy flesh formed from below, pushing off the diseased tissue. In a short time the wound was complete- ly healed. Had we applied Zam- Buk at first we might have saved the finger.
