PAINFUL FEET,
'Pain in the feet in walking is"gen-
erally due to the weakness or the
actual breaking down of the arch
ef'the foot—or ratherof the arches,
for, actually there are two.,The
second is a transverse arch t the
L a ` base of the toes. When it gives
Air jo , way, the foot broadens out, and
since' the spring of -the toes is lost,
fo e the step is less elastic and often
L S , accompanied with pain.
In rare. instances the arch is not
broken down, but is rather exag-
gerated, and the heel is somewhat
raised; the condition, in fact, is
ort°f; that of incomplete clubfoot. In
lee ^ walking, the heel barely touches
laic , the ground, and any attempt to

wild. This brief account of the causes
five:' of pain in the feet shows that it is
.impossible to say .offhand what will
'nesbring relief. Almost always, how-
yal- ,ever., even in cases that seem pure-
unk (ly rheumatic, much relief comes
from walking more on the outer side
>rta r of the foot; the patient should not
'ro et:ne out, but should point the feet
ter ?straight forward, or even toe in
somewhat. That relaxes the tension
lI a. ;,on the ligaments that support the
A
arch and allows them to recover
;bre their ,one.
ned When the effort to force the foot
liar ' into this position is irksome or pain-
ful, the patient should have the
t of soles and heels of his shoes built
asst up with a layer of leather on the
'.inner half, so as to throw the weight
in- of the body on the outer side of
,011 the foot and relieve the arch from
and: pressure. If that does not bring re -
led, lief, it may be necessary to use an
arch -support. That, however,
should be done only on the advice
' of the surgeon, for in certain cases
t the support aggravates the condi-
eart, tion and prevents the strengthening
ofd of the ligaments that support the
se: akl.
tar- I:l' caused by -rheumatism or even

Ile , PURE AIR.
"The belief that pure air must al -
of ti ways come froln the outside is re-
s. bysponsible for a great number of
r- .colds," said a family doctor. "While•
it is necessary for health that one
should have plenty of air these sud-
den changes make it necessary that
we should use the utmost caution
in the ventilation of sleeping and
living -rooms. Many persons seem
to, think that the only way to get
pare air into a bedroom is to ad-
mit it from the 6utside, in spite of
the fact that the wide difference in
temperature renders them most
easily susceptible to an attack of
cold. With the rapid fall of the
temperature outside the house there
is a constant danger of draught. I
know of a great many cases where
young persons especially have been
attacked during speedy fluctuations
`ii temperature. They could not
..:understand why they should take
cold while the windows were open
as usual—just enough for ventila-
tion. To get pure air it is not nec-
essary that it be taken in directly
from the outside. An easy way to
get fresh air is to fill the house with
outside air and warm it, After-
wards take in what fresh air is
necessary at the wannest point and
ventilate your sleeping rooms
x hrough .the adjoining apartments.
hos you obviate the gathering of
oo innch moisture with the air
hich you breathe while in the re-
axed condition of slumber. If it is
at convenient to ventilate the
leaping apartments in any other
ay than from the outside the
nnount of cold air let in should be
minimum."

(Special). --"I got perfect results
from Dodd's . Kidney Pills." So
says Mr. Sam Mallette of this place.
And he has a reason.
"My sickness started from a'
strain," Mr. Mallette continues;
"and for a year I-dicd not know a
well day,, • My sleep was broken and
unrefreshing; racy appetite was fit-
ful and my limbs would swell.
"Then rheumatism set in and
neuralgia, backache, headache and
heart trouble added to my tortures.
I was attended to by a doctor, but
he diel me no lasting good.
"Finally, when Bright's Disease
had me in its grasp, I decided to
try Dodd's Kidney Pills, and after
taking three boxes; I was as well as
ever 1 was in my life. I have had
no pain since and advise all my
friends.who suffer from kidney dis-
ease to take Dodd's Kidney Pills
and be cured."
Mr. Mallette's case shows what
neglected kidney disease will result
in and what splendid results Dodd's
Kidney Pills give.

A startling .announcement comes

FLOWERS LOVE MELODIES.
Professor Hans Teitgen, of Mun-
ich, Germany, has discovered that
flowers are sensitive to music, and
betray their individual natures by
expanding their petals under the in-
fluence of certain melodies. Thus,
rosebuds open to the old-fashioned
airs of Lulli; peonies take on a
deeper hue under the fanfares • of
Wagner; violets raise their heads
to the gentle romances of modern
composers; while lilies clo 'e at the
sound of frivolous valse tunes.
