COLLIDED WITH STREET CAR
Murray Johnston Former Morrie Boy
Hine in Loiidosa
Mulley Johnston, 5$ Askhi St.,
London, aiad formerly of. J3ell;rave,
Ontario, was 'badly hurt when a.truck
driven by him collidedwith Qtfaway
Street car No. 542, in charge of Mot-
orman Dan, Martin and Conductor
Ross McKay, on Rectory St., : at the
corner of King St,, on Saturday morn-
ing at 7.2o.
Johnston, who owns and operates,.
the truck for Siiverwoods' Limited,
while travelling east on King Se,, witli
a load of milk and ice cream, attempt
ed to cross in front of the Ottaway
car, which was northbound on Rec-
tory. lent, misjudging his distance, he
struck the street car at the front, and
forcing it across the street, until it
crashed against the curb and telegraph
pole on the corner, badly ;damaging
the street car and overturning his own
truck by the impact.
Johnston was taken home in the
public ambulance after having six
stitches put in a wound ou his chin.
There were six passengers on board
the street car, two girls and four
fa men. One passenger, Bert Johnston,
received a cut on his wrist, and was
attended by Dr. Clegg.
William Blanchard, an ice cream
h. packer, was travelling on the truck at
gCni; at the time and received a slight cut
U on the face.
• According to Mr. Johnston, .who
was seen by The Advertiser at his
home shortly after the accident, he
had been driving east on King St,,
following his accustomed morning
route with ice cream, etc. He stated
that he was travelling at a usual rate
iC of -speed in his truck, Corning to the
Ig corner of Rectory- St., he proceeded
to make the crossing and not until
he was on the tracks did he notice
a street car coming towards hint.
"I did not see the car before I
reached the corner because from the
way I was approaching it was impos-
sible to see either way," said Mr.
Johnston. "When .I got' onto the
tracks and saw it I jammed on my
brakes and tried to stop but the ear
flit the rear end 'of the truck and
threw it onto the grass turning it
iA. over on top of myself and Bill Blau -
chard, who was helping me. The
street car came too, we having knock-
ed it off the track by the force of the.
impact.
"After being struck I: don't know
what happened as both of us were
knocked _out for a ,few minutes and
I could not even tell -you who pulled
us out from under the truck. ; The
next thing I remember is some doc-
tor putting some stitches in my chin,
four I think, but I do not even know
his name. ,

saw the collision, it had been ,purely
accidental` and no •blame could be
attached to either thestreet railway or
himself,
EA Examination of the truck disclosed
it the fact that it was; not badly damaged
ea and will be ready for use again on
Monday morning. Mr. Johnston also
stated that he would be working again
by that time.
The street car did not get off' so
lightly, the front of it being smashed
and one wheel broken off. The
wrecking crew of the railway man;
aged to get the street car clear again°
by, q o'clock.
The contents of the truck,' several.
freezers of ice cream and some cream
and 'milk cans belonging to farmers
who Mr, Johnston visits during the
day, were scattered around but un-
less
'damaged. About 2,500 ice cream con-
es and a bag of salt were lost, the
former being' broken up and the sail:
eel having. burst the bag it was in.
Police Sergeant Maddeugli and two
constables were in charge at the
scene of the accident and did all that
was possible in Helping the injured.
The most difficult task was keeping
the traffic regulated till the street was:
clear and this was done satisfactorily.
