As Winghatri has no fire"alarm sys"
tem outside of a bell in the Town
Hal the responsibility of notifying
the Fire Dept. has been handed by
the Telephone Company although this
class of wont is not its legitimate
business and very undesirable to the
Company for the followitig reasons.
;
When a subscriber calls central' and
W
reports a fire, the operator is instrtict-
ed to connect him with the Fire Dept.,
which in the case of Wingham means
that she liar to ring some fifteen tele-
phones and it .rnost cases, advise the
firemen answering, the location of the
fire. As soon as the bell at the Town
Hall is rung, subscribers, who hear it
invariably call central, asking for the
location of the fire, and when this
happens so muclv extra work is in-.
volved that a patron, who wishes to
call doctor incase of an aecident. or
merely wishes to call a number is pro-
bably unable; to get the operator and
usually lodges a complaint of poor
service as the operator: is too busy
giving out, information regarding the

COMMUNICATION
Wingham, -March: 31st:, 3923
Mr. -Editor,- la
Dear, Sir:- . l•
Willyou kindly permit, Ine.,a
space -in the columns qf your paper
to criticize in part', the. services that
our fire department is 'rendering: the
ratepayers in our town. You made
mention of in your last issue 'of the
excitement that prevailed among the
firemen, at the recent Wandsman fire.
Is there any wonder they becanne ex-
-cited? Hewatoften have we seen 'the
firemen out at practice? If they have
'practiced four times during, the past
four years, it must, have been while
nci person pould see them, I -under-
stand, according to law on, by-law,
-they are obliged- to Practice once a
week:" _Perhaps they don't need it,
whefi fine or seven met 'get around a
hydrant to make ,a hose coupling,
when two .is ,supposed. to lie sufficient
Perhaps if a little more practice
Was indulged -ie. during -the slimmer
motithsa they could rerneanber .during
the- winter .mouths .whether a hydrant
atuned to the right or the left to open
It and not jump at the conclusion it
wasafrozett, because they were trying
.open it the %VI -ring waY. '
Is it not a shame to stand by and
witness property being burnt up ow-
ingto such bungling as just mention-
ed, along with turning ort the water
with • tie nozzle on the hose?
There ore, some good then 'on the fire
brigade and there are some mighty
poor ones. - It appears to ine like a
government without a leadeasthe or-
ganizatioa is wrong. A good deal
more might justly be said about the
handling- of the fire ' apparatus, but
study • our town fathers, who were
so,anxiotts last nomination to look af-
ter the interests of our town will in-
veStigate and if not, the ratepayers
and business men of which. I am one,
• should act en their own defence. a
Thanking you. for your space, I re-
• main, a ratepayer and business man, ,
