The High School Literary Society
held their annual meeting for the term
on Thursday afternoon. The presi-
dent, W. Alton'gave an address. The
program -I consisted of choruses by the
school, chorus by the girls, an instru-
mental by Margaret Rivers, duets by
Mona aird Dora Mitchell ancl Bessie
and Isabelle Chestnut, The chief
feature on the prograxn was a debate
on the subject, "Resolved that fire has
caused greater destruction to human
life and property than water." The
affirmative was held byRoss 'McDon-
ald, Annie Campbell and Alvin Woods.
The negative was taken by Helen
Thompson, Etta IvIcQuoid and T. Al-
ton, the negative winning by a small
argin. •

Very sudden was the call that came
to Mrs. M. Naylor at her late home,
ohrHairelock St. She had been serious-
ly ill a week before, but was well on
the way to recovery, and was sitting
chatting with her hustia.n'd ancl child-
ren and the end came in a moment.
• Death was » due to -the forming of a
clot of blood in the heart. Mrs. Nay-
lor was of an exceptionally bright and
»cheerful and "-kindly disposition,. and
was greatly.estedmed berae large circle
of friends. She was a meinber of the
Methodist church and an active work-
er in the Young Ladi'es' Bible» Class,
where she will be greatly missed. Be-
fore her rnarnage7nine years ago, she
was Miss Della Higgins, She was in
her 28th. ycer. Mre. and MTS. Naylor
have been in lancknow about four
years. She leaves to mourn her early
demise, besides her young hesba.ntl,

spect were many and beautiful. Six,
brothers of the deceased, were the

Drowned At GodeliCh •
GoderiCh had its second drbwning
accident of the season an Saturday af-
ternoon about, four-o'clock, when. Rob-
ert Irvine, a young man about 22 years
of age, was drewned, riivihe was a
native of the town arid is a son of Mr.
and Mrs. -Wm. Irvine.• father is
employed as etigineer at the Purity
Flour Mills. He »was it the employ
of the government dredge which has-
been working in the harbour here all
season. Ile was making ajunip'from
the dredge to the scow when he slip-
ped and' fell in. • •

A forther resident' of '. Wingliam
passed avvial'y at Clinton on Tuesday
evening of last week, in the person of
Thomas Watt. Deceased when a resi-
dent" of Winghamsresided on Maple
St.; in the house now occupied by Mr.
1. C. Maguire,
Mr. Watt was born in Oxford
County but had spertt many years' in
Huron, having resided at Vl31uevale,
Wingliam and for se-veral years past
in Clinton, ' Wherever he lived he was
held in the highest regard for his
kindly, courteous mentser and his ster-
ling qualities of intdtrity and upright-
• ness. His goitis is a distinct loss to
the community. He was a member of
Wesley- clrercla in ,whieh he wa„s an
office -bearer and, entil his health' fall!,
ed, 110 was a teacher in the Sunday
Sehool, He will be inuch missed in
the life of the chneeh. 'Re was twide
married, being united less thati three
years ago to Miss Mabel 'Kerr, who
