TUE-SCHOOL NURSE
Wingliarta and Rural School Will
One At Cnce
DTA M,Kenzie Smith and Nurse Jean
Campbell who have made a tour of in-
specti, n of the public schools in this vic-
inity have been successful in securing
enough school boards who believe that a
school nurse is needed and who are will-
ing to co-operate in securing one. WIng-
ham High and Public School Boards met
to-gether some weeks ago and decided
they would secure the servicenbf a school
nurse,' if the required number of rural
schools would do likewise Now the
appointment of a school nurse, with head-
quarters at litnghata is a certainty. °
A fairly representative meeting f the
Trustees of the schools interested was
held in the Wingham town hall on Mon-
day evening, Mr. J. A. Mortoa chair-
man of the iiiiinghatn High School Board
was chosen as chairman and Mr. Dudley
Holmes as secretary. Dr. Smith outlined
the work of a school nurse and the bene-
fitswo be derived by the children because
of her presence She cited several cases
where defective teeth and eyes were let go
unheeded, because the _parents and
teacher knew nothing of it, until it was
too late to be remedied. In one school
they visited a little girl -who was severely
repremanded because she would not hold
her headup when she was reading, they
found she could not see. when ,she held
her head away from her book, in another
school a little boy wearing glasseswasput
to sit in the back seat. The teacher com-
plained how dull .he was andthe nurse
very soon found the reason he could not
read the writing distinctly on the front
blackboard' and so on. In case a child is
going to school and there is a . contagious
disease in the home, the muse knows of it
and ' does not permit them to continue
until 'everyone is well at -home In still
another case a lad watgoing to school in
a filthy condition and showed signs of
itch, the nurse' goes fantails home and
sees to it that he is properly treated and
kept home until he is ,better and is pro-
perly washed before going. In a school
district near Wingham a couple of chil-
dren were not -attending school, the nurse
ascertained ,the reason ehey had not
proper clothing for winter, In one case
the father was in jail and eleven children
were living in starvation while the mother
worked out, and in another case the
mot her was dead. - Dr. McKenzie Smith
and Nurse Campbell placed requests in
the local paper and kind peopleaoon pro-
vided clothing and shoes and they saw to
it that they were properly cleaned up,
This is a part of the work of the school
nurse and a God send to humanity it
mteit be not only to the children affected
but to those who have to sit In school
with thenea day long.
The cost of g school nurse is $1200 per
year olus $500 to pay for ° travelling ex-
penses. Each country school is required
to pay $25 per room and town schools
$50 per room. The Provincial Govern-
ment gives a grant of $10,06 to each room
and there are altogether 46 teachers in
the district comprising the following
schools: -

lacking the excitement was kept high by

Wingham started the scoring shortly
after the face off, but Harriston came
strong and soon tied the score and before
the end of the first period squeezed in

period Winghant boys bombarded the
opposing goal, but the fast work oi the
goal keeper kept the score low, only
allowing the puck to slip in once thereby
tieing the score The third period was a
