A PIONEER OF HURON
Thomas McKenzie, Clinton's old-
est business man passed away in the
'Clinton Hospital on Wednesday
morning, Nov. 24th, at the age of 88
years.
The late Mr. McKenzie was born
in Big Harbor, Nova Scotia, and
silent the early years of his life there
When quite a young man he came
to Ontario and did various contract-
ing in various places, finally coming
to Clinton, which has been his home
for the past fifty-eight years. He was
of Highland _Scotch descent, and a
staunch Liberal in Ipolitics and a
Presbyterian iti religion
His entire life was spent in the
lumber business . When he catne to
Clinton, he worked for six years with
his brother-in-law, the late William,
Cooper, ,afterwards establishing a
partnership with him. When Mr.
Cooper retired, Mr. McKenzie carried
on the business alone, and continued
to do so until August, when he be-
came ill, He was very ambitions, and
his one desire business was to
work up good brisineSg principles, and
have satisfied custOthers. In spite of
many set backs, one afire which coin-
pletely destroyed his plant many years
ago, he went to work with determin
ation, He built a planing milt, lo-
cated close to the station, which has
been on the site since, x880, and is
one of the landmarks of the town.
For a long timeMr. McKenzie did
a general contracting business, and
erected some of the finest buildings,
both public and private, in that sec -
