"LIBEL" By Radio
acro
SINCE Radio has assumed such an
important part in the life ofthe world,
it has become more and more appar-
ent that libel by radio must be care -
fatly guarded against.
Spain and other European countries
.have passed laws prohibiting radio
;libel, and while tie need of such legis-
lation is recognized in the United
:States, no definite action has been
taken.
The first libel suit brought agai in
a radio station for slander transmitted
throughits system has not been e:s-
tained. It was brought against the
'Naional Radio Company, operators
of station KFJF, by C. W .Friss, un-
der -sheriff of Oklahoma County, fol-
lowing the broadcasting of a sermon
by Rev. LincolnMcConnell, pastor of
the First Baptist Church, of Oklahoma,
City. + ..i a . e , i 1 -
It was alleged that the minister
made references in the course of the
broadcast ,to alleged illegal acts coni-
mitted by county officials. The case
was dismissed on a demurrer filed by
station KFJF, the. argument being
that as a telephone company could
not be held liable for a slanderous
conversation passing over its wires
between two individuals, neither could
a broadcasting station be held liable.
It was an odd coincidence that this
case shotild have been settled within
a few days after this amendment, mak-
ing slander over the air a criminal
offense, was defeated in the House of
Representatives in Washington.
Secretary Hoover is said tobe a-
gainst anything that would limit the
"free speech of a radio station, but
he believes that the station should be

Q,—R. C. C. says: `' I have been
having trouble with my 5 -tube set be-
cause it frequently starts to howl. I
have been told that this was caused
my loudspeaker. When I move
the speaker farther away it sometimes
stops the howling, but not always.
How can this be overcome?"
Ans.—If removing the sPeaker to
a reasonable distance does not elim
ate the trouble, `mount the tubes in.
cushioned sockets and connect them`
with flexible wires.
Q. A, R. G. says: "I have just re -3
built my receiver using the same
parts but shielding it completely. I
find that the shielding seems to have
shifted the wavelength range of the.
set quite a little. Should the shielding
do that?"
Ans.:—When the metal of the shield
ing material comes very close to the
inductances of the set it is likely to
change the wavelength range consider-
ably,
Q.—M. E. D. asks; "Can, I use from
55o to Zoo volts of B battery on U. V.
2oIA tubes in an A. F. amplifier?"
Ans.:--If proper C battery is used.
the high plate voltage will not dam-
age the UV tubes .It would probably
make a better amplifier, `though, to
use a power tube instead.
