your action be, let that good feeling
prevail whielt is the only sure way of
winning an election contest. What-
ever be the wish of the conventioe,
let every man and woman in the par
ty, fall in behind the candidate and
give loyal support, in order to bring
North Huron back under the leader-
ship of Right Hon. Arthur Merghen."
(Appian se).
Major E. Pettigrew, Wingham,
'Dudley 1-lohnes, Wingham, and Har-
ry Edwards, Goderich, were appoint-
ed a credential committee and nom-
inations were then received. Those
proposed were given 15 minutes to
address the convention and most ef
them took all of it.
"There was perhaps never a time
when such enthusiasm was manifest-
ed in the riding," said John Joynt, M.
L. A., "when in the midst of early
harvest we have such a gathering. I
have only asked two persons to sap -
port me on this occasion. I did ask
George Spotton and I suggested to
Mr. MacEwan that he step aside.
(Laughter and applause). Some of
my political friends said I ought to
be the man and win out in this con-
test, and I finally agreed that if I
could get the nomination compa.rat-
ivelY easy I would be in the field. I
will reserve judgment until all the
candidates have spoken."
T. G. Allen' intimated that he had
had some idea of standing as an in-
dependent candidate. He announced
that he had a. platform of his own,
the main feature of which was opposi-
tion to political corruption. In the
short •time at his disposal he did not
go, into detail, but suggested, as
there appeared to be rivalry between
Winghain aid Goderich, he might be
selected as oneresiding between the
two.

Who has announced his intention.
to retire from public life after having
served in the Provincial Parliament
since 1919. He has never known de-
feat at the hands of the electors of
North Huron.
E. R. Wigle, M, L. A., was applaud
ed when he announced his intention
to offer himself at the provincial
convention. He took vigorous ex-
ception to 2 statement by Mr. Allen
that the two-party system was falling
down, and pointed to the \career of
the Drury Government. There was
nothing wrong that the great parties
.of the country could not clean up, he
maintained.
Warden McKibbon promised a
good fight' if he were cho-sen. He
reviewed his municipal career and
pointed out that in him the conven-
tion could choose a man who had not
been mixed up in the rivalries of pre -L
vious conventions. He felt Mr.
Meighen was the right man to clean
up affairs at Ottawa
Dr. R. L. Stewart, Wingham, whose i
popularity was indicated by applause,
dismissed federal issues briefly and
assured the convention that if not
,
chosen be would prove a good loser.

behind Mr, MacEwen in no uncertain
manner if he is the candidate, I am
not asking for a -third chance, but to
fight over again a battle that was un-
decided last fall, and if 'I cannot win
North Heroic I will be the political
slave for any candidate you may put
up for the rest of my life. I will still
reside in North 'Huron and will not
be accepting a' Gc>vernment job in
any party. Our leaders have not put
their noses in any convention. I be
Hove I am in as goodstanding with
the Conservative party of Canada as
any mail in Huron. I am not pressing
nty claim. I have nobody behind me
and if I get this ,convention and am
not sanctioned by Rt. Hon. Arthur
Meighen I will hand you back your
nomination. But Mr. MacEwan, if
he is elected by even half a vote ov-
er me, I am behind him., heart and
soul. ••
There was a suggestion by •Mr,
Spotton that the six general officers
of the association should not •vete,
but it was •pointed out that this had
always been the custom and the meet-
ing- upheld it,
•Mr. McKibbon proposed that the
third highest contestant should , be
balloted» on along with the highest as
a final test. The meeting approved,
but as the vote went this was not
necessaty,
The first ballot resulted as follows:
MacEwan 123, Spotton tot, Stewart.
25, I\IcKibbon II, Allen 2. .
Them were Several surples ballots,'
due either teemadvertance or 'he en-
thusiasm of certain persons not dele-
gates. The second vote resulted:
IVIacEwan 116, Spotton 104, Stewart
26 and McKibbon 12. On the final
'vote ,between the' two 'leaders Mr.
MacEwan had a margin of 30 votes.
The resolutions committee present-
ed resolutions affirming unbounded
confidence in the policies and leader --
ship of Premier Meighen and Premier
Ferguson and these •the convention
apprOyed with hearty applause.
"We feel" said the committee, in a
further resolution, "we would be ,re-
miss in mar duty if we failed to ex-
press, on behalf of North Huron, our
appreciation of the untiring effort of
our representative in the -Legislature,
Mr. John Joynt. We hope he may
long be spared to -enjoy good health
and vvork in the interests o'f the C.on-
servative'vAssociatiop.
In ;,,acknowledgenient Mr. J. Joynt
said -he had always tried to do his
duty and recalling efforts he had re-
peatedly made in favor of a flat rate
on hydro power, declared his inten-
to continue his efforts to that
Mr. Spotton said:
There is an election case standing
over which will be decided in the
fall, and if I have a chance to win I
think I should not be cut' off and sent
,into the wilderness. I -want a chance
to fight that fight over again. • Our
stock, as Mr. MacEwan has said,
went up 1200 votes between 1921 and
1925, and I have,every reason to be-
lieve we have gone up 300 this year."
Mr. MacEwan here explained that
in reference to communications from
headquarters he hacl no intention of
.giving the impression that Mr. Mei-
ghen was giving instructions. There
'had been nothing underhand in any
way. He emphasized, however, that
this was new election and no part of
the last contest.
Mr. Joynt here announced that he
livered by Mr. Guthrie, himself a
tower of strength to the Conservative
party, Reviewing the situation at Ot-
tawa, he urged the electors to get rid
of the vacillating King administration.
He was of opinion Mr. Joynt had
perhaps received his share of public
honors. His rivalry with Mr. Spott-
on, he,„ emphasized, was entirely,
friendly, and if the latter proved to
'be choke ot the convention he would
do his very best to elect him.
'He did remarkably well in the,
last election" Mr. MacEwan contin-
ued, "and is deserving of everything
that the party cart give him."
The speaker said that 1.nofiries
had made throughout the riding infl-
ated good support for himself,„and
he predicted A majority of Soo to 900
Goderich alone.
Mr. Spotton, who was dwith
great applause, said; There -txs zaa
controversy in this matter. There
scents to be some effort to capitalize
possible strife between Spotton and
