Chief speaker of the afternoon was Hon. Hugh Guthrie, minister of nat- ional defence, who dealt with the closing events of the Ottawa session and gave'some outstanding features of the customs inquiry. Very fortun- ately, as it proved, in view of the lengthy nomination proceedings, the minister spoke -at the' opening, and then left for Ottawa, to attend a Ca- binet meeting Friday. Ile was. in fine form. and greatly delightly a keenly interested audience, of about '600, one third of whom were ladies. Peter W. Scott, of Belgrave, presit- dent of the association, was in the chair, and in answer to an inquiry in- timated that the executive intended to call the annual meeting right after the federal election, It is proposed to merge the provincial and Domin- ion associations in this riding. Hon. Mr. Guthrie alluded to the guilty persons in the' customs sean- dal as "probably the most systematic collection of crooks that has ever op- erated in the civilized world," and said that J, E.
