of Thomas Jefferson, leaving the White House, where it was inspected
by President Coolidge. The gig was used by Jefferson on his journey
to Philadelphia, which resulted in his writing the Declaration of Inde
pendence, and is being"taken from Monticello to Philadelphia for 'the
exposition.

OLDEST STATUE IN THE
WORLD
This old stone statue, repre-
senting King Gudea, who reigned
Bagasch in South Mesopotamia
about 3,000 B. C., .has recently
been purchased by the Museum
of Copenhagen for $60,000. While
believed to be the oldest statue
in the world it is excellently pre-
served. It. was unearthed during
-the war while troops were erect-
ing fortifications in Mesopotamia.

Miss Joan LaCoster, daring girl auto racer, at the wheel of her
Powerful car with which she mashed the existing mile dirt track tecord

SUBMARINE BROUGHT TO SURFACE, ONLY TO SINK
AGAIN
New London, Conn.—After lying on the bed of the Atlantic,Ocean
for nine months, the Submarine S-51, sunk last September in collision
with the City of Rome, flashed to the surface, For four hours it; seabed
that the work of months was to be successful, but the stern pontoons
broke from their moorings and the submersible sank again. Photo
