The author of this .hymn was throughout life a great Sufferer, Her father was the Rev, Edward Payson, said to have been "One of the .most gifted and saintly .men that the American mini etry has ever known. In such a rev- erence was his name held . by the American people that after his death his name was given to so many chil- dren in baptism that there were hun- dreds, if not thousands of Edward Pays ons." Elizabeth Payson was born in 18I8 and very early in life showed marked literary ability. When still in her teens, she was a regular contributor to : "The Youth's Companion" and other publications. As a teacher in the public schools she was greatly be- loved and shorted a remarkably well- trained mind. In 1845 she married Rev. George Prentis who became a professor in Union Theological Sem- inary, New York City, Even as a child Mrs. Prentis had suffered, dfrom chronis insomnia and following } sae rs brought no relief, There were fere days in her life with- out intense suffering, but she seldom complained and managedto do a great deal of work. A'll who met her were charmed by her radiant person- ality and unfailing cheerfulness but QTS few understood the great agony through which she so often had to pass. She onee wrote: "Much of my experience of life has cost nie a great price and I,wish to use it for comfort- ing and strengthening other souls. In 1869 Mrs, 'Prentiss wrote her famous ''story: "Stepping Heaven- ward." It has an 'enornauos circula- tion and more than 200,000 copies have been sold in America'' alone, while it has been translated into sev- eral other languages and sold in large numbers. Another story of her's t which also has been widely read was: "The Flower of the Family." Mrs. Prentiss published a book con- taining one hundred and twenty-three poems and it, is indicative of her per- sonal attachment to Jesus Christ that more than one hundred are addressed to him or have to do with his mini- stry. "More Love. to Thee, 0 . Christ" was written in 1866. It had been a hard year for the author. Her bodi- ly • suffering had been even greater than usualand clouds of anxiety and! foreboding had been hanging over her. The hymn reflectsthe n yin'n: ed to Lancelot Grain, tr5'I g' Secy., R. R.
