BETTER HEAL'I'li
OBESITY
By Dr. Arthur L. rorster
During the "R" months most peo-
ple, put on five to ten pounds of su-
perfluous flesh that is generally lost
through the summer months, The
reason that during the winter season
people eat more and exercise less than
they do in "the good old summer-
time." Only those whose ductless
glands are especially well-balanced
fail to exhibit these weight variations.
There you have the three main cau-
ses of obesity—that haunting dread (If
the modern woman—the "bugbear" of
the middle-aged man, And of the
three my observation and experience
have convinced me that the ductless
glands play the leading part.
I know people who are as thin as
the proverbial rail that- eat three times
'as much as their neighbor who tips
}the scales at' two hundred pounds. I
know people who are "fat and forty"
that exercise in six different' ways,
-while their thin friend never moves a
muscle if he can, help it. Which
means that "getting fat" isn't entirely
}a matter of eating and exercise.

These are the pineal body and pitui- X •
tary gland. (in the head); the thyroid
(in the neck); the inarnmary glands
'(breasts); the adrenals (on top the
kidneys), the ovaries and. testes.
Each of these glands secretes a flu-
id that enters the bloodstream, and
the resultant mixture regulates most
of the amore important vital processes.
Thus, a person who is born without
a thyroid gland remains a midget, and
one with too much pituitary substan-
ce becomes a giant,
Study Discloses Defects
Between these two extremes we
find the people who are normal in ev-
ery respect, save that they are 1.00,
fat or too thin. And A. careful study
of each case will diselose some de-
fect in one of the ductless glands. For
example, we are all familiar with the
rapid gain of weight in women, after
the menopause or after oerative re -
(=oval of the ovaries. Ovarian defi-
ciency is a well-established cause of
obesity in some cases. In others, the
cause may lie somewhere else.

Working on this theory some in-
'dustrious persons have put on the
'market reducing remedies consisting
of the active principle of these glands.
Generally they are obtained from the
glands of sheep and, although suitable
for. Ione person they may be harmful
to another. Consequently preparations
of this kind should be taken only und-
er the guidance of a physician.
I In no case, however, is the a mis-
tration of these gland extracts suffi-
cient. The individual must regulate
his diet and exercise, as well. Thus
it becomes necessary to cut' down on
starches and sugars (potatoes, white'
bread, pastries, candy) because these
are fattening. At .the same time the
fats must be oxidized by exercise to,
prevent their accumulation in the bo-
dy. Only in this tanner can,one ac-
quire and maintain a normal weight.
IThere is a fourth cause of obesity
'which should receive mention in this
;Place even though it is not remedi-
able—namely, heredity. There is no
"doubt that we inherit from our ances-
tors a tendency to be fat or thih.
While there are exceptions to this
rule as to all others, the offspring of
'obese parents generally follow suit.
In such cases it naturally becomes
more difficult to maintain a normal
weight, because such a tendency to
,stoutness is as much a part of one's
makeup as the color of his eyes.
•Blit even these people can do a great
deal for themselves if they will.
The trouble with most fat people is
that while they want to be thin they
are unwilling to pay the price in self -
1 denial and exertion.
They want to be petite and eat po-
tatoes at the same time. It can't be
done. Becoming a "perfect 56" takes
more than, envying those who arc.
Only a correct ' regime consistently
and persistently followed .can cure
obesity!

This is a little ottt of iny line—I
am tot a dentit—but fortunately I
am able to give you the information
desired, I think.
(1) It is very likely that the den-
tist had to go pretty close to the pulp
chamber of the tooth when he drilled
out the decayed portion, As a result
his filling Nvas probably separated_
from the pulp by a very thin layer a
tooth tubstane. The pulp, being very'
sensitive, is irritated by air at aiI
times and by food when you eat, be-
tause the filling is a better conductor
Of heat and cold thari the normal
tooth strecture. But nature will pro,,,
tect you and your teeth by causing
the pulp to recede soniewhat from the
source of irritation, and when that has
tappened your troubles will be over.
