Scholes One of the words that has received no place in the terminology of mo- dern scientific medicine is "bilious- ness." It lacks exact meaning. , It is commonly used to desdribe functional disturbance's consisting of a varying group of symptoms that are supposed to arise from an excess of bile. The symptoms usually consist of languor, headache, dizziness, disturbed diges- tion, bad breath and coated longue. Often there 'is constipation, These symptoms evidently are not caused by an excess of bile, if there is such a thing: And the word "biliousness" fails to give us any exact idea of their cause. . The person who is inclined to be "bilious" is generally what is known as a "good liver." He or she not on- ly eats too much, as •a rule, but eats the wrong kinds of food. The diet 'contains too • 'much fat, greasy and fried :foods, sugar and stimulants. If anyone can eat an excess of these things and not get into trouble, it is the person .who gets plenty of exer- cise. The °'bilious" one is not, as • a rule, match "given to exercise, The manner of ` living that :''predis- poses • to so-called "biliousness" is fetich the same as that which predis- poses to disease of the gall -bladder, gall -stones, obesity and diabetes. /Popular Treatment Doubtful Someonehs . said that when it comes to beingdoctored, the liver is How long do they generally last? ;4.: the most abused organ in tite human body. 'l''he popular treatment fot "biliousness" consists in taking: some 'drug that is expected to stir the sup- posedly sluggish 'liver to activity. 'It is extremely doubtful if the drugs thatart commonly taken to "stimu- late the liver" have any direct action on that organ. Their bene.fieial ef- fect, when 'they ,do appear' to be bene- ficial probably results front any laxa- tive action that they May have.
