Christmas Books for Children
The education, development, and
amusement of the modern .child is
given consideration as never before.
Tlie choice of good -books for theist
'has 'been a matter of study; and if
your children do not have good read-
ing, it is because you have not given
sufficient time to their choosing. A
wonderful choice is available. If you
have not visited the children's de-
partment in a large' book store, it is
worth your while to make an'effort
to do so. Most book stores allow you
to browse around and peep into their
treasures, and they will be a revela-
tion if you love children and books.
Many people buy children's books
by the financial yard -stick only, with
no thought as,to their suitability or
value. Have You not heard people
choosing books sornwhat in this man -

is only 10 cents? That would do for
Jean."
"This one has a good looking cov-
er for a quarter. I. think I will buy
that one for Tommy."
"Look at these. They are marked
down from 75 cenis to 37. I am
going to take two of them."
Undoubtedly some of the lovely
books are so .expensive that most o
Its can only look and iairg, but gots
books can be bought for the santprice. that is payed for some of the
trash that wp see,
Many , of the books which we wit
wish to"buy are the old favorites
what have stood the test of so many
years, but evdn these are adapted to.
the modern child with better print
and illustrations:. When it came
time for the rising generation to read
Swiss Family Robinson, it was refus-
ed with scorn, because the print was
too small, This I indignantly denied
--had I not read it literally dozens
of times, and it was a beautiful book.
Further examin'tion forced me to re-
trct, for the print was abominably
small,

Books for the 'Teenier should live
up to their name of picture books.
They should be filled with pictures
as the greatest appeal is made to the
small child through the eye. There
are some beautifully illustrated books
of nursery _rhymes. Those of Kate
Greenway and Jessie Wilcox Smith
are outstanding, Leslie Brooks has
illustrated a great many books ancI
the children will love the pictures in
such books as The Three Bears and
The Three Pigs. I think the tatt:ir
is the best loved story of all, Child-
ren never tire of "He huffed and lie
puffed." The rhyme and the repiti-
tion of sounds with their repeated oc-
curence throughout the story fascin-
ate the child. Little Black Sarnbo
is of more recent vintage bot every
child loves the simpie story.
A. A. Milne's books are enjoyed
by old and young. Ther, is a new
volume this year which is a good pur-
chase for those who do not own
"When We. Were Very Young" and
the Pooh books, as it contains the
hest of the prose and poetry of the
three preceeding volumes. It is call-
ed The Christopher Robin Story
Book. Alice in Wonderland never
loses its savor and all children should
know •it.
Young children like po,try even
when they cannot understand it.
Robert Louis Stevenson, Eugene
Field and Jaynes Whit.omh Riley are
all appreciated, Mrs. Grov. s, of Tor-
onto, in her book The Kingdom of
Childhood has some things which ap-
peal strongly to the child. They love
The Quarintined Army with irs
swinging rhythm and its tale of quar-
entine for Measles, which so many
of them have experienced.
Turn-te-tum, this is a drum,
Here conies an army, Thin! Tum!

The same type of Story appeals to ;books. My opinion will always be
both boys and girls through -.he first biased as I was one -of those . girls
who loved boys' books and the Hen-
ty books laid a foundation for inter-
est in history. The books may rot
! have been historically correct, but
History became interesting because
;it told more about something We had

worth's books such as The Tower of
