Call it mental telegraphy, spiritual
visna sheer .ability or • lucky faking,
Wroxeter .people have some reasons
.for belief in the stran6 ge cult possess -
,
•ed by Professor Gladstone, who has
.been ..entertaining the public for a
week,
On evening • lastGlad-
stoneFriday Prof. G ad-
stone was playing in• Gort:ie, and Mrs.
Erwin Durst, of Wroxeter, asked
about a gold watch that had been
missing for three weeks. She was
told that it was in her home in an
• old pocketbook, and that she would
get it. When Mr. • and Mrs. Durst
returned home they found that some
rings, six in all, were also missing,
• and this caused More anxiety. Early
the next morning Mr. Durst drove
to Wroxeter and consulted the Prof:
Mr. Gladstone at once drove to
Wroxeter to the Durst home and 'aslc-
ed for the young man who boarded
there. He was finally located in the
barber shop, and the professor de-.
mianded the jewelry. The young magi
denied the accusation, but was order-
ed to go to his boarding house and
produce the stolen goods. He was
told to give them to the party he
stole them from. He finally produc-
ed them from his room and gave
them to Mrs. Durst. He was not
`placed under arrest, ; but was ordered
to pack up his clothes and leave the
village. The young 'Welshman, Dav-
id Harman by name, had only been.
in Wroxeter for about three months,
•working on the bridge there, and he
seemed of a very giiiet disposition.
Constable Town, of Wroxeter, as-
sisted the professor in the capture of
the young man.

FAVORITE HMYNS
Purer yet and purer
I would be in mind,
Dearer -yet and dearer
Every duty find;
Hoping still and trusting
God. without a fear,
Patiently believing
He will make all clear.
Calmer yet and calmer
In the hours of pain,
'urer' yet and surer
Peace at last to gain.
Suffering still and doing,
To His will resigned,
And to God subduing
Heart and will and mind,
Higher yet and higher, •
Out of clouds of night;
Nearer ydt and nearer
Rising to the light—
Light serene and holy
Where my soul may rest
Purified and lowly,
Sanctified and blest.
Swifter yet and swifter
Ever onward run,
Finer yet and finer
Step as 1 go on;
Oft these earnest longings
Swell within niy breast,
Yet their inner meanings
Ne'er can be expressed:
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one
of Germany's greatest poets, reckon-
ed among the most famous literary
men the world has produced, is cred-
ited with the original of this hymn.
Son of Johann Caspar Goethe, a law-
yer, he was born at Prankfort,am-
Main in 1749 and died at Weimer in
1892. His well known drama of
Faust is one of the world's classic's
and as an opera is often performed
in the great centres of civilization and
in various languages,
Although there is a religious and
Christian trend in Faust, and in some
other of his writings he himself has
said that he wrote no poems suitable
for use in public worship In spite
of that, however, the beauty, moral-
ity and popularity of his Faust, first
published in 1808, has led several
translators to cast many of his :lines
into formswhich would make them
serve as hymns, and as such some
of them have made their way into
Unitarian hymnals.
Inh-°Christian d
most cases the an
churchly sense of these translations,
cannot be said to belong altogether
to ,the, originals but have been im-
ported into them.
Who it was that translated Goethe's
lines into the form of our hymn is
notn certainly, oknow ce tail It wasdecid-
edlyedly
not as some have thought, Thos..
Carlyle the Chelsea philosopher who
translated ,Goethe's masonic song
written for the Free Mason's lodge.
at Weisner, into an English "form,
in "The Masoii ways are a type of
existence," parts of which have been
included in some United States hy-
mnals and used both in lodge and
church. Our hymn is not at all in.
Carlyle's style, nor are the lines as
near to their
original as that writer
g
always tried to keep.
Whoever did cast Goethe's words
intotheir form as printed herewith,
made a good job of it and gave us a
useful hymn, uplifting, practical, and
not without -spirituality. No one is
likely to object , to the admission in-
to modern hymn books of a hymn
written by so renowned a poet, :es-
pecially when it possesses attributes
which from a literary and religious
point of view make it a decided ac-
quisition to them..
Our readers may be glad to have
such a hymn as this, not,to be found
in many modern hymnals, for private
use,' especially when set to the music
of so celebrated a composer so sacred
music, as the '.Reverend Dr, J. 13,
Dykes, whose hymn tunes are ' the
highly valued gift of our days to the
saered harmonies of the ages,
The hymn may be compared, verse
by verse, with the Reverend Thring's
"Saviour, blessed`+ Saviour, Listed
while we sing," not forgetting to
note its graduations, "Purer, Canner,
Higher and Swifter," of the soul's
progress, in the conception of the
German secular poet as compared
with the "Nearer, Greater, Clearer,
Brighter, Onward andHigher"
of the
religious i iwriter,'ll
el Actually it will be
noted the difference is, not sri very,
great between the two poets, Mr:
Thring dwells upon the attractive
power' of the Saviour to bring souls
to Himself, the centre of all right
desires. Goethe upon the wish of the
soul to rest in ' Him, whose cry is,
"Come unto Me all ye 'that are weary
and heavy laden, and I will give you
rest."

GettiNg Your Money's
Worth
When you spend your money you naturally want to get all
you can, that is everyone's right. Only those who are commonly
referred to as having "more money than sense" throw their mon-
ey away. All others are careful to see they do not get the wortat
of any bargain. But one has to be able to look farther than the
end of his nose if he is to be sure that he is getting his money's
worth. That is the defence of those who buy outside their com-
munity, instead of patronizing :home merchants, This is old 'the-
ory, the resident of any community makes, (through intensive
buying), the low price possible. Then increased patronage to
their merchants gives those same merchants a bigger buying op-
portunity, thereby 'maintaining a minimum price for good stand-
ard merchandise. The price buyer always thinks he is looking
out for No. 1 and he says it is not his fault, if the merchant in;
his community is nod making any money and is forced out of
business. He 'overlooks the fact that he is likely to be as hard
hist as anyone else when the merchant closes his doors, but it
is a 20 to 1 shot that the buyer is the one who loses, and all be-
cause he did not believe in his community merchants sufficiently
to.support'them. You never bought anything for nothing in your
life. Don't try it now. Think it over,
