of modern life. It has been much
store prevalent since the days when
every one had a handy apple barrel,
Apple eating is one way of prevent-
ing it. Many people find that an
apple before going to bed is a great
help.
The ' apple growers "might take a
leaf out of the cigarette makers 15ook.
They ,might advertise to advantage
—Reach for an apple 'instead of a
sweet. People feel tired or a little.

Aeroplanes are an every -day occur-
••ence, yet they still give us thrills. I
.always watch them with interest and
admire their grace. Y Last week we
had thrills in plenty, as there were
.about 50 planes flew over London
en route from Detroit to Toronto.
''They did not come in mass forma-
tion, but came by ones, and• two's
and three's in quick succession. I
sat ' on a bench in my garden and
watched them. Most of them flew
•directly over -head, but some were
.farther North and some South. For
,about a half-hour there was one in
sight most of the time, .if not in ac-
tual sight they were always within
.sound. Sometimes there would be
one disappearing in the horizon in
the East as another appeared out of
the horizon in the West. Through
it all I could hear the massed bands
playing in the park at a reception to
General` Higgins, the new head of the
Salvation Army. When they played
'"O God; our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,"'
`my emotions were stirred to the very
,depths.
Canadian. Apples
Apples are, one of the most vale -
:able fruits from any point of view.
"'They have flavor, ;are fairly reason-
able in price, and area available a
large part of the year. Dietetically
:they are of great value, as they don -
',twin the precious minerals and vita-
-mins, that'are so necessary for good
health. They contain considerable
cellulose which helps to prevent con-
.stipation and enough starches and su-
gar in a large apple to give you 100
.calories. They can be eaten raw or
,cooked and should be used freely in
:•the diet.
Canadian apples have a very en-
viable reputation abroad. At times
at seems as if most of the good ap-
pies are exported as one cannot al-
ways depend on buying good apples
in the stores. The first week in .Oc-
-:tober I saw apples displayed in a
-local fruit store at 4 for 25 cents.
'This struck me as ridiculous espec-
`iaily as they were flanked by oranges
:at one side at 29 cents a dozen, and
.on the other by California grapes at
:2• lbs:. for 25 cents. They were love-
ly- looking apples and were probably
imported. There certainly is no nec-
tessity to import apples in •Ontario
in the early fall as the country is full
of home-grown apples. I have be -
,come hardened to paying high prices
'for winter apples, but it always goes
.against the grain to pay a high price
:for early apples, when I know they
.are lying rotting in the orchards in
:the country. Too many years of get-
ting apples off your own or your
neighbour's trees account for it.
As youngsters we found the neigh-
boring apples trees well planned: We
had Duchess apples and there was a
Yellow -Harvest tree next door, a
Watercore across the roadnand a Red
Astrachan handy. So that took care
of the early varieties. ;One of my
chums had a St. Lawrence tree at
'home, and another had a Strawberry,
while we had snows and there were
Alexanders by the fence next to the
school. Alexanders are a snare and
a delusion, as they are not half as
good as they look, 13y that"time the
Spies in our garden were ready and
these supplemented by some Green-
ings which were brought and Russets
from our own tree did us until Spring,
It is hard to imagine a child who
does not like apples,
Nova Scotia is the leading apple
province. The Gravenstein grows to
perfection there. It has a distinct
flavor and aroma all its own. We
get , it only occasionally in Ontario,
,.bttit if you have an opportunity to
get„it be sure to do so.: Apples can
be grown in most parts of Ontario
.-and.' niore attention is being •paid to
the industry. At one time ,it was
thought that . apples could not be
grown in the middle West, but the
Experimental farms have proved that
tofallacy;i'
be Brr Columbia a t sh ib ap-
ples are .famed, The Okanagan Val-
ley seems to be specially suited to
growing apples.
Good For he Teeth
Apples are ` good for the. teeth,
They are good in two ways. They
supply the growing child with some
of the minerals ' necessary to grow
good teeth. Then they act in a me-
chanical way as ,a tooth cleaner.
Children often want an .apple as
soon as they have finished a meal.
You may wonder where they are go-
ing to find room for it and think they
do not need it, but for once they
know better than you, The apple
cleans the mouth .and teeth, and they
would ,be better with an . apple 'after
every meal.
Constipation is one of the curses
hungry, or perhaps they vaguely won-
der what they can find to do next, So
they eat a sweet or reach for a cig-
arette,

were a bowl of apples,in evidence,
they might take an apple or two in-
stead, to their great advantage. The
natural 'craving for sweets should be
satisfied to a great extent by the su-
gar in fresh fruits.
Apple Pudding
Slice apples into a baking dish and
put sufficent brown sugar between
the layers to sweeten them. If the
lapples
are not very
y juicy
add
a small l
amount of water, Cover alid bake
until soft. Without , stirring the ap-
ples or disturbing them, add the fol-
lowing -8 tablespoons flour, 2 table-
spoons brown sugar and ` 1 table --
spoon butter. Rub the butter into
the flour and sugar and sprinkle this
over the apples, Bake uncovered in
a hot oven until browned. The juice
of the apples forms' thaliquid, :r'n
the ovenmust be hot so that it will;
boil up..
If your dish is large
use
rounded tablespoons instead of levet
This is a most delicious pudding,

Consider The
Mend' t.r nt
Do you ever stop to consider what your merchant means
to your community? What it means to him from the standpoint
of investment, to stock his store with seasonable merchandise
of every description for the convenience of community residents?.
He will choose, we will say, a five thousand dollar stock of goods
and place them on his shelves for your convenience of purchase,
he has studied your needs, he knows your desires. Why not
show your confidence in him through your purchases? That same
investment could easily be placed alt 6% outside of your com-
munity and tripled in one year. If you do not help, through
your purchases of his merchandise, his stock becomes old and
shopworn, and finally•he gives up doing business in disgust. When
this is done your merchant leaves iihe community. ,Yes, he has
lost out, not so much from a monetary standpoint, but his •ccn-
fid'ence has been shattered. When confidence is gone: you re-
move the foundation of your whole civic structure. Yes, the
merchant lost, but not as much as the community who lost him.
When a community can point with pride to the stability of its
business interests you are doubly safe in assuming a vital factor
in it. Think it over and CONSIDER that the residents through
their support have been YOUR MERCHANT.

ROYAL ,SERVICE 'STATION
About two years ago J. E. Homuth took over the Royal
Service Station on Josephine Street, north, one of the best lo-
cations in town, and most attractive. British American Super- .
Power, Peerless and Ethyl Gasolines are supplied by four pumps
so that prompt service is always assured. He carries a varied
assortment of lubricating oils, and offers a service and satisfac-
tion in lubrication of cars not to be had elsewhere in town, with
special attention to crank case needs} Have the old oil with all
the sediment and refuse removed regularly from the crank case
and differential, let us supply new oil, and you will notice a new
smoothness to your motor. Goodrich Tires are good tires, and
that is why we handle them. Tubes and accessories always on
hand
