Hints For Homebodies Written for The Advance -Times By Jessie Allen Brown Sunset at Goderich In those antediluvian days when everyone collected post -cards, no al-' burn was complete without at ,least ione picture of a "Sunset at Goderich." :Time, has not changed them and they care just' as beautiful now as they 'were then. Each evening they are .amazingly beautiful and their beauty • lasts a long bine after the sun has •dipped, apparently into the blue waters' of the lake. Sometimes they are :beautiful. with their gorgeous colors, ',other times because of their delicate' pastel shades which melt into each •other in sheer beauty. They differ so that you think they must have run through the whole gamut of variety when along comes another night with an entirely different picture. My ex- perience •of sunsets in different local- ities, has been perforce rather limited :but the autumn sunsets at Fort Fran- ces will always , remain in my mem- ory. They were a riot of colors, so vivid that were they painted they would be unbelievable. Crude colors, unrefined. September Foods September is one glorious month in which to prepare meals. The !fruits of the earth, to say nothing of :the vegetables, are so plentiful. They are all so good, it is hard to make a choice. What more can you, ask 'than to have the very choicest of 'foods very reasonable in price and :then to cap the climax to know that obey are good for you. We have tomatoes, cucumbers, tcorn, sweet peppers and mushrooms,. .apples, peaches, pears, grapes, melons, :blueberries and so on. We can have 'them three meals a day and still. have change -for the next clay Even the 'weather helps us to enjoy our meals :as the lassitude of the warm weather has gone and the slight chill in the air gives an unconiparable zest to our ,niea1s. Tonuil•oes Tomatoes have improved 'wonder fully through proper development. It. is not so long ago that tomatoes were very watery and full of seeds but now the best table tomatoes are .solid and meaty and cut into good firm slices. There are so many ways to use them, both cooked and raw, that they may be served constantly and yet have variety. There are people who even like them sliced for .breakfast. To- mato juice is rich in vitamin C and is used as a substitute for Orange Juice, in fact many doctors prefer it to the Orange Juice. Canned tom- atoes contain just as much as the fresh so be sore and can plenty for winter use. Tomatoes and Corn Cut a slice from the blossom end of several tomatoes that are about the same size. 'Scoop out the pulp ;and sprinkle Ute inside of the tomato with salt and pepper and sugar. Fill the tomato with leftover ,cooked corn which has been cut from the• cob and seasonedwith salt and pepper, Dot with butter or' cover with buttered crumbs and bake in a moderaee oven about half aA hour. Stuffed Tomatoes. Scoop out tomatoes and season as WINCHAM ADVANCE -TIMES in . These are specially good with cream, ed Potatoes.. Serve on a large platter with a mound of creamed potatoes in the centre and place the• stuffed To- matoes around it. Tomato and Sardine Salad Arrange slices of tomato and the sardines on lettuce viith rings of Spanish Onions if desired. Serve with French Dressing. No other sal- ad dressing is as successful, in this particular salad as the French, Tomato Salad Seopp out tomatoes and fill with a mixture of finely chopped cabbage and celery and a little minced onion, moistened with Boiled Salad Dress- ing. Garnish with a' strip o pepper or a sprig of parsley, Fried Tomatoes Cut tomatoes in thick slices, sea- son and fry quickly in hot fat, Serve fried green tomatoes with steak Fried ripe tomatoes accompany bacon or pork chops. Cucumber Salad Pare large cucumbers,.cut in guar - kers and remove the seedy portion. Cut in small' cubes, add :minced onion gr een and moisten with Salad .Dressing. MacLean Lumber & Coal Company Howson & Howson Flour Mills at Inose ndent In the days when the Indians inhabited this country a man could do very much as he pleased. His success and happiness depended solely upon himself. What he did meant little to any- one else. gut those days are no longer. • Life under modern conditions is a complicated systtem, a union of the residents of one community with another, each de- pendent to a large extent on the' other. Modern society is based on the family, where the success of all depends on the efforts of each. Loyalty is 'tihe secret of happiness. The members of a fam- ily help each other by their actions; the residents of a communi- ty must unite for combined success; and the citizens of a coun- try mustwork together for the well-being of the nation. A man may claim that he has the right to spend his money. where he pleases, that no one can stop him if he wants to buy his goods outside Wingham. He is literally right, but that man observes only 'the law of selfishness and becomes a parasite in the life .of the community. Under the terms of his law that man should send his children to the schools in the community where he buys his goods. Do not use the argument that the things you buy outside Wing - ham are small. It is the little things in life that count. ' Make. them count for Wingham. Buy from your home merchants. H. E. IS RIS & CO.
