Hints For Homebodies Written for The Advance -Times By Jessie Allen Brown How to Reduce Not so long ago I heard a woman facetiously remark that her whole day had been ruined as someone had just :told her that she was' as fat as ever. 'Not many of us like to be told that we arc fat. People are beginning to realize that excessive fat is conduc- ;tive to neither health nor beauty. For is while everyone was reducing, even ;those who were naturally as thin as :bean -poles were trying different diets. Now it has narrowed to those who .actually need it as it is fashionable again to have the odd curve. It is ,certainly one thing to be thankful for —that people are not everlastingly talkifig diets because it was fearfully boring to have to listen to so rzttdh •of it. A little goes a long -way. [[oDiet is a very effective way to re tciuce but there are other aids too. Did you ever see a fat person who ,did not like to sleep? They are al- Ways ready to snatch forty winks any :time possible, The thin person is apt to .be too busy, not necessarily too busy, working, but just busy. I never yet saw a fat person who was fidgety. They are apt to have more repose and consequently more fat. The thin personis busier, they do not neces- sarily accomplish more, for they at;e :apt to waste, effort but they use en- Iergy needlessly and so less is left to .tUrn into 'fat, . So the moral of this is, if you want to reduce do not rest too much in the daytime. Exercise Fat should be moulted off literally. Take exercise that is strenuous enough to make you perspire freely each day. You hear women say that they do not need to take exercise, they get enough doing housework. Certainly a good many different sets of mttscles are used in the day's work but not 'many women work hard enough to perspire, Cooking over a Trot stove may do it but not very of- ten does the work alone have that result. The exercise taken doing house- work is ouse-work'is not done in the open air and to get the most good out of exercise it should be in the fresh ale. Any game is good as then there is relax- atiota as well as eatercise, Take all the pleasure you can get legitimately for most of us are apt to crake life a Very serious business. So play .a n un 1you r :.i t o ie s n re e game t p p re a d cclue into he notyour t k bargain. If it isra to pleasure or your convenience to play a game you can always walk, but walk as if you meant it and do not dawdle, Diet, Now we come tohe all important t p question of diet. The trouble with most people on diets is that they are acutely conscious of it all the time because they aaYhungry, lw s feel This is not necessary with a reducing diet because the chief, discomfort corner froma lackof bulk, not 4 from the lack of calories, So lk'idY your stomach into thinking it is getting sufficient and eat the foods which are low in calories :and higB in bulk, You can eat the foods which are low in cal - is and high c z in r bulk. You can eat enough so that you will not feel un- comfortable and yet reduce, The number of calories needed var- ies with the occupation of that person. The average adult in a sedentary oc- cupation requires from 2400 to 2709 calories a day, To reduce it is nec- essary to take less than the required. amount and draw on the accumulated stores of fat to snake' up the rest. You can reduce a quarter of a pound a day without undue discomfort, Cut down on the' starches and fats. A Balanced Diet. ,. A proper amount of Protein and. Mineral Matters must be eaten even in' a reducing diet, because the warn tissues of the body must be 'replaced,. One, of the best ways to get sufficient calciurn, and we must never forget that calcium is one of our greatest requirements, is by the use of skim milk. Drink it and use it in desserts and in cottage cheese. Now for some of the do's and do- n't's of reducing. Use quantities of the bulky foods, fz•uits and vegetables, clear soups, .bran and so on.' Start your breakfast with fruit and your dinner with a properly, chosen soup; A clear souphas little pourlshtnent and a vegetable soup without rice or barley is good. I)o not eat fat meats or fish. Eat' lean beef,. lamb, veal, chicken, whitefish, cod and haddock, Use eggs and some lean bacon. Avoid rich gravies and cream sauces or. soups, Use vegetables freely, aspar-: MINNINNIMISMONIMONIMMIN agps,: ,carrots, cabbage, cauliflowers,; , beans, peas, radishes, onions, cucrza-. bers and all the rest, (lave plertflr ofalads but do not use rich sala4, dressings. Eat potatoes very spa* ingly, also bread and butter. Whole' wheat bread` is good, The; dessert course should consist ustally of fruit or gelatinous desserts. « Avoid rich cake and pastry. Use , your intelligence and you can re- duce gradually without, discomforts,, i Advance -Times "BUY= AT HOME" Campai; COMMUNITY 'BUYING DIRECTORY AND BUSINESS GUIDE The Merchants and Business men represented below are co-operating in an effort to prove to the residents of the town and surrounding community that val.- " al" ues equal to any of the larger towns or cities may be procured in local stores. Every possible person is careful to see that he does not get the worst of any deal and only the reckless "throw their money away." However, one must look farther than the end of one's nose to be certain that he is getting his money's worth. People who buy outside Wingham are. disallusioned. They are not getting their money's worth, although they will perhaps tell you they save money in doing so. Residents of Wingham save themselves money, by buying in this town. This is how they do it. It is .a well established fact that intensive baying enables merchants to carry larger stocks and to purchase these stocks in large quantities, thereby secur- ing them at a lower pro rata price. Thus receive the same per- centage profit. This is the system on which all successful chain stores are established. The person who buys an article in another •city because he thinks he is getting it a few cents cheaper says that it is not his fault if the merchant in Wingham is not making any money. He overlooks the fact that he would be as hard hit as anyone else if the merchant is forced out of business. The outside buyer is the one who loses. His family also loses because he is taking from the community which will be their future homes as citizens, that staff of its existence by buying outside Wingham. Think it over. H. E. ISARD & CO. Gibson took over the Central Bak- ery, and ever since has enjoyed an increasing business, due no doubt to the high standard of his output, and the 'cordial treat- ment extended his customers. He has obtained a than local reputation as baker of pastry and cakes, while his bread success- fully maintains a deserved oppularity. Mr. Gibson has just com- pleted the installation of a new modern oven, that took over 50,- 000 0,000 bricks, a vast amount of reinforcing steel, and which weighs something like 20 tons. Built on most approved plans, better and more uniform baking is possible, while it will prove eonomical on fuel. The old oven will be removed, and the space occupied by it used as a larged work shop.
