"Awakening China"
The blood of China's ancient
;aristocracy and the spirit of mod-

son of Dr. Teyhi Hsieh, noted
Chinese diplomat and statesman,
who will deliver his stimulating
lecture "Awakening China" al
the coming Canadian Chautauqua
here,
That Canadians may gain a
truer view of China and her prob-

that he is the national interpreter
of Chinese aspirations, philosophy
and hopes.
An editorial in the Toronto
*Globe speaks of Doctor Hsieh a's
ollows:
• "One of the most cultured as
well as wittiest visitors Toronto has
• liad in many a day is Dr. Tehyi
• Hsieh of China, guest of Board of
'Trade. Doctor Hsieh, in addition to
much Oriental lore; knows the Oc-
•-cident better than most of us. He
is a graduate of Cambridge and
has had wide diplomatic experience
ou both sides of the Atlantic. He
id typical of Young China, which
now is rapidly taking over all that
rightly belongs to China from the
enfeebled hands of the Old Regime.
We all might learn, a good deal
from this brilliant representative
of China." •

• The Stranger Within Our Gates
.A young man from Holland gave
a very interesting talk at a Home and
School Club meeting recently. He -
told us about his own country and
• about his' experiences in Canada. To
it '
about
n't Canada was a wonderful country
leause he had fallen into kind hands
and was well used. He told us about
'another young Hollander who had not
been so fortunate. His employers
had lackecl the milk- of human kind-
ness and he was a lonesome lad try-
ing to save enough money to go back
home. Just imagine the difference in
the letters of these two young men.
We may not all be employers but
most of us come in contact at one
time or another with strangers to our
country and we can at least be friend-
ly. • I kno've of no more.practical pat-
riotism. Satisfied, happy letters to
the friends at home are Canada's best
advertisement. We need more popu-
lation and the friends of those who

pects.

The stinttner babies are Intich More
fortunate than the winter babies, as
it is easy for thei . to have the sun
shine, The Uutra-Violet rays act as
a substance in the skin and vitamin

supply of vitamin it will not have
rickets. Doctors tell us that from 50
per cent. to 80 per cent, of our babies
have rickets in some degree. Direct
sunshine is not only a prevention but
it is a cure.
Let the stylish stouts take heart and

When a community becomes "dead" the fact is written. all over
it. Residents may try to conceal the true condition but to visitors
they are quite apparent, And once a town becomes "dead" it
never stages a come -back. Its residents are never prosperous a-
• gain, and those who possess foresight move to another city where
more possibilities are presented to them.
Wingham is a growing .and prosperous community. It is for
the residents of this town to say whether or not this progress
will continue. The merchants and businessmen are the backbone
of its success. On their business depends the progress of the
community. A prosperous community is the same as a successful,
large corporation. The residents of Wing, ham are the stock-
holders of the town. • The merchants are the directors. If the
business, as operated by the directors, shows large profits, the
residents will receive the benefits in dividends. A stockholder,
who does his personal business with another firm and buys his
goods in cities outside, acts in ,opposition to his own interests. It
would be a foolish move in business.
Residents of this town buy in other, places •because they do
not realize the harm they are doing themselves in doing so. Pub-
lic 'spirited residents should instruct their neighbors. Tell, them
that you buy here and get better value for your money than they
do in other places. Build up for increased civic dividends. Boost
Wingham and Wingham merchants.

W. J. CLARK, Plumber, Tinsmith and Heating Expert has been
business o nhis own accord for about a year, but had several years'
experience in town previously and is thus well established with
the public. *His store, the old Bell, property, Josepbine Street, car-
ries a full line of heating and plumbing requisites, and also tin-
ware. Oil burners for homes, are becoming popular, because of
their perfection in keeping an even temperature, and elimination
of the dust and ashes nuisance. So far as economy goes, there
is a lot in their favor.
• R. A. CURRIE'S furniture warerooms are a particularly invit-
ing place for the young couple just starting to make a home. He
carries a surprisingly large and well assorted stock of the worth-
while furniture, moderately pried, and specializes in Dining Room
and Bed Room Suites. Mr. Currie has been in business for about
• fifteen years, and has seen its volulme increase yearly. Some
months ago he added the first modern funera lcar in town, to his
undertaking department, an article which can be converted into
an ambulance.
